At Nerd Wallet, we’re on a mission to bring clarity to all of life’s financial decisions and every great mission needs a team of exceptional Nerds. We’ve built an inclusive, flexible, and candid culture where you’re empowered to grow, take smart risks, and be unapologetically yourself (cape optional). Whether remote or in-office, we support how you thrive best. We invest in your well-being, development, and ability to make an impact because when one Nerd levels up, we all do.

Role Summary:

Nerd Wallet is seeking a detail-oriented and execution-focused Accounting Manager to support our growing and increasingly complex accounting operations.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Corporate Accounting and Compliance, this role will own several key general ledger areas—including compensation, leases, accruals, and consolidations—while playing a critical role in managing the month-end close, internal reporting, and audit readiness.

This is a high-impact role designed for a strong operator who can drive execution, bring structure to complex processes, and has a clear path to owning the full month-end close over time.

This role reports to the Senior Manager, Corp Accounting & Compliance.

In this role, you will:

  • Build deep ownership over critical GL areas in a complex, high-growth environment

  • Play a central role in scaling accounting processes following multiple acquisitions

  • Develop into broader ownership of the month-end close over time

  • Help shape a more efficient, scalable, and audit-ready accounting function

Where you can make an impact:

Own and operate key areas of the general ledger

  • Lead end-to-end accounting for compensation (payroll and equity), leases, accruals, and consolidation/intercompany

  • Own the full cycle for your areas, including journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and internal reporting

  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of financial results in accordance with GAAP and company policies

Drive execution of the month-end close and internal reporting

  • Partner with the Senior Manager, Corporate Accounting and Compliance to manage close timelines and ensure deliverables are completed on schedule

  • Own the coordination and completion of internal reporting and flux analysis across the accounting team

  • Act as a key operator in the close process, helping drive accountability across stakeholders

Leverage automation and AI to scale accounting processes

  • Actively identify opportunities to automate manual processes and improve efficiency across the close and reporting cycle

  • Utilize Nerd Wallet’s internal AI tools and resources to streamline workflows, enhance accuracy, and reduce manual effort

  • Experiment with and implement scalable solutions, with the support of leadership, to modernize accounting operations

Lead audit and controls execution

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for auditors for assigned areas and support broader audit coordination (PBCs, walkthroughs, testing)

  • Maintain and enhance internal controls (SOX) across owned processes and support controls over broader close activities

  • Ensure documentation is complete, accurate, and audit-ready

Support M&A integration and operationalization

  • Partner with the Senior Manager, Corporate Accounting and Compliance on M&A activities, including integration of acquired entities into close processes and systems

  • Help operationalize new accounting processes, ensuring scalability and alignment with company standards

Lead and develop a team

  • Manage and mentor 2–3 accountants, providing guidance, review, and professional development

  • Drive accountability, organization, and execution across your team, especially during close

Partner cross-functionally

  • Work closely with FP&A on accruals, variance analysis, and budget vs. actual insights

  • Collaborate with Financial Systems and HRIS teams on payroll, equity, and systems-related initiatives

  • Partner with Legal and business stakeholders on accruals and other accounting matters

You are:

  • Highly organized and deadline-driven, with a strong sense of ownership over deliverables

  • Detail-oriented and hands-on, comfortable operating in the weeds while managing processes

  • A strong executor who can independently drive work to completion in a fast-paced environment

  • A clear communicator who can coordinate across teams and ensure accountability during the close process

  • A collaborative leader who can develop team members while maintaining high standards

Your experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA required

  • 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, including:

  • External audit experience

  • Operational accounting experience in a public company environment

  • Prior people management experience (1–2+ years)

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and internal controls (SOX)

  • Experience with large ERP systems (e.g., Oracle, SAP, Net Suite)

Preferred:

  • Experience with Oracle Fusion

  • Exposure to M&A integration and accounting operationalization

  • Experience leveraging automation and AI tools to improve accounting processes and drive efficiency

  • Background in Big 4 or mid-tier public accounting

What success looks like (First 6–12 Months):

  • Take full ownership of compensation, leases, accruals, and consolidation accounting areas

  • Establish consistency and accuracy in account reconciliations, flux analysis, and internal reporting

  • Improve coordination and timeliness of close deliverables across stakeholders

  • Support successful audit cycles with well-prepared documentation and minimal rework

  • Partner on M&A integrations, helping bring acquired entities into standard processes

  • Begin expanding scope toward broader ownership of the close process

  • This role will be remote (based in the U.S.).
