Based on the novel by Hungarian writer and poet Sándor Márai, the story involves two former friends who reconnect. Christopher Hampton previously adapted the novel to the stage in a production starring Jeremy Irons and Patrick Malahide. A previous film adaptation was planned in the mid-00s to be directed by Milos Forman and starring long-time friends Sean Connery and Klaus Maria Brandauer (as well as Winona Ryder), but an argument between Connery and a producer killed the project.
