The Atlas Data Federation and Archiving (ADFA) Customer Experience team supports the Atlas Data Federation system which empowers customers to create virtual databases that can query, transform, and analyze data across multiple sources (MongoDB clusters and cloud object storage) through a unified MongoDB query interface, without moving or copying the underlying data. The ADF system handles hundreds of millions of queries per month, processing exabytes of customer data.

About the Role

This role is responsible for driving high-impact projects that improve and enhance the performance, automation, and customer experience of the Atlas Data Federation and Archiving distributed systems. We value intellectual curiosity and honesty, and building together in an environment that prioritizes collaboration over competition.

Our team is distributed across North America. The position is open to our “in office”, “flexible”, or fully remote working models with convenient work hours for each time-zone.

If you are passionate about data management, distributed systems, and leadership, and are excited to work on high-impact, high-growth projects, we would love to hear from you.

We are looking to speak to candidates who are based in New York City for our hybrid working model.

Role Responsibilities

  • Design, architect, build, and deliver core pieces of Atlas with focus on storage systems, query engine, and customer facing components with coding in Go, Java, and React

  • Lead projects from specification to delivery while collaborating with other Atlas teams

  • Mentor and grow other junior team members

  • Improve our codebase, best practices, and design principles

  • Define your top priorities and focuses, communicate them, and execute against them

Candidate Profile

  • 5+ years experience in software engineering, primarily focused on cloud-native backend systems

  • B.Sc / M.Sc in Computer Science or similar field, or equivalent practical experience

  • Track record of designing, building, implementing, and operating highly complex projects in distributed storage systems with high availability and durability guarantees

  • Proficient in a modern compiled programming language (Go, Java, C#, C++, etc.)

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Desire to collaborate with colleagues and mentor fellow engineers

  • Is curious, collaborative, empathetic, and intellectually honest

  • Has a passion for problem solving and learning new things in the domains of computer science and software engineering

Nice to haves

  • Experience with on-call and customer support troubleshooting and debugging

  • Experience working with a query engine or database internal experience

  • Experience troubleshooting resource management and performance issues in a distributed system

  • Experience optimizing throughput in distributed storage systems

  • Experience working with multiple cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure)

Success Measures

  • In 1 month, you'll learn about the system and ask quality questions, go through the inner & outer loop

  • In 3 months, you'll have contributed to a large project

  • In 6 months, you’ll be leading the design and execution of your own project
