About the role

Meta is seeking a Software Development Engineer in Test to drive quality and reliability across large-scale software systems. In this role, you will design and build sophisticated test infrastructure, automated testing frameworks, and validation pipelines that enable engineering teams to ship high-quality software with confidence. You will partner closely with product and infrastructure engineers to define testability requirements, identify systemic quality gaps, and establish testing strategies that scale across complex, distributed systems. This role sits at the intersection of software engineering and quality assurance, requiring deep technical expertise in test architecture, automation, and reliability engineering.

Software Development Engineer in Test Responsibilities:

Design and implement scalable automated test frameworks, test harnesses, and validation infrastructure for large-scale distributed systems
Define and drive end-to-end testing strategies including unit, integration, system, regression, and performance testing across multiple product areas
Collaborate with product and infrastructure engineers to embed testability requirements early in the software design and development lifecycle
Develop tooling and pipelines to improve test coverage, test execution speed, and signal quality across CI/CD workflows
Identify systemic quality gaps through root cause analysis of failures, flaky tests, and production incidents, and drive resolution across teams
Establish and evangelize testing best practices, coding standards, and quality engineering patterns for the broader engineering organization
Lead technical design reviews for test infrastructure components, providing guidance to peers on architecture and implementation tradeoffs
Build observability and reporting systems to surface test health metrics, coverage trends, and reliability signals to engineering leadership
Partner with cross-functional teams to define quality gates and release criteria that balance velocity with production reliability

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience designing and building automated test frameworks and infrastructure for large-scale or distributed software systems
6+ years of experience in software development engineering in test, test automation, or quality engineering roles
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
Experience with performance, load, or reliability testing methodologies and tooling
Experience identifying root causes of test failures and production defects through systematic debugging and analysis
Experience influencing engineering decisions through written technical proposals and cross-functional stakeholder alignment

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with chaos engineering, fault injection, or adversarial testing techniques to validate system resilience
Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and defining quality gates for staged rollout processes
Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, Java, C++, or Hack, applied specifically to test framework development
Experience building test infrastructure for systems with high concurrency, low latency requirements, or complex distributed architectures
Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
