Responsibilities
Organizational Relationships
Reports directly to a Chair of Strategy. Works collaboratively across the Strategy Department, with multidisciplinary teams throughout Mayo Clinic and external entities. Works in partnership with other department members at all levels, as well as various physicians and administrative colleagues and committees. Often presents and shares information with leaders and committees. May interact, support, and consult with professionals of other medical systems and hospitals, external organizations, and technical support personnel as needed or requested. May guide fellows, interns and other staff members within the functional area.
Position Overview:
The Senior Health Policy Strategist plays a critical role in aligning Mayo Clinic’s strategic direction with the evolving healthcare policy environment. This individual serves as a subject matter expert on business, legal, policy, regulatory, and payer trends, providing forward-looking insights and translating complex developments in the external landscape into actionable recommendations for leaders. The Senior Health Policy Strategist partners with clinical, operational, and administrative leaders to ensure alignment of enterprise priorities with evolving public policy landscapes, positioning the organization as a proactive leader in healthcare transformation.
The Senior Health Policy Strategist partners across multidisciplinary teams to drive innovation, challenge the status quo, and implement solutions and programs to advance priorities. Acts as a thought partner, influencing strategic direction through analysis and insights that shape our business model and advance strategic choices in alignment with the long-term strategic plan. Establishes and maintains strong customer relationships with both internal and external partners, is a change agent, championing agile thinking and working to enable teams and individuals to succeed. Collaborates with strategy consulting teams to integrate policy considerations into long-range planning, scenario development, and business case analysis. This individual will translate complex content from the external landscape into accessible formats for diverse audiences, including executive-ready presentations, leadership briefings, and internal education sessions.

Also, Mayo Clinic DOES NOT participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.This is a hybrid position and must be located within 100 miles of a Mayo Clinic Health System campus (Eau Claire, WI) with an expectation to work on-site of 2 -3 days per week.Qualifications
Minimum Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience; or a Master’s degree in public policy, health administration, public health, or a relevant advanced degree (e.g., JD, MBA) and 3 years of experience in healthcare policy, consulting, law, government affairs, regulatory strategy, or related roles.
- Experience in a professional advisory firm, healthcare delivery system, academic medical center, trade association, or policy organization preferred.
Additional Experience and/or Qualifications:
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Deep understanding of U.S. healthcare systems, policy dynamics and regulatory processes
- Strong alignment with Mayo’s core values.
- Strong understanding of and/or prior engagement with CMS, HHS, state Medicaid programs, or Congressional health committees preferred.
- Ability to apply strategic foresight and scenario planning methodologies to anticipate policy impacts and inform long-range decision-making.
- Demonstrates problem-solving and systems thinking competencies, risk taking and innovation, collaborative leadership, executive communication, navigating ambiguity, and driving results.
- Exemplifies strong leadership and influencing capabilities.
- Resilient change agent comfortable navigating ambiguity, working under minimal direction, and delivering results under pressure.
- Must possess strong executive presence, oral and written communication, presentation skills, and superior interpersonal skills to facilitate effective relationships within and outside the Mayo Clinic.
- Relationship-oriented, high-performing individual with a strong balance of EQ and IQ.
- Solid organizational and project management skills.
- Financial and business acumen to create viable strategies and pragmatic business and operating plans.
- Ability to evaluate and improve existing processes and develop/implement new processes where appropriate. Meets deadlines with enthusiasm and confidence. Proactively identifies and mitigates risk with meticulous project planning and creative solutions.
- Proven ability to thrive in a team-oriented, consensus-driven environment.
- Must demonstrate ability to handle sensitive/confidential/proprietary information.
