The Assistant Vice President, Philanthropic Relations, Mass Eye and Ear is a senior leadership role within the Mass General Brigham’s Development Office. Reporting to an Associate Vice President of Development, Assistant Vice President is responsible for driving the growth and innovation initiatives, programs and efforts to achieve the annual philanthropic revenue goals established by department and hospital senior leaders and the President, Academic Medical Centers, Mass General Brigham.
Assistant Vice Presidents lead frontline or non-frontline fundraising business units, develop strong relationships and tactical partnerships with organizational leaders, faculty, administrators and donors, pursue new philanthropic opportunities, develop and drive the implementation of innovative strategies and partnerships to advance the work of the MGB Development Office.
Assistant Vice Presidents work collaboratively with their peers to drive strategy on priority setting, policy and resource allocation, identify emerging opportunities to drive revenue and solve organizational challenges which may extend outside their defined areas of responsibility. Assistant Vice Presidents are accountable for the effective management of the budget(s) allocated to the program(s) under their purview, in compliance with the organization’s policies and practices.
Assistant Vice Presidents adhere to all office-wide and institutional policies with respect to gift and campaign counting, expense approval, performance reviews, performance management, prospect management, and other applicable operational areas.
Strategic Leadership:
- Provide strategic leadership to advance philanthropic growth for Mass Eye and Ear, accelerating revenue through coordinated strategy, shared systems, and enterprise-wide alignment.
- Partner with Mass Eye and Ear leadership to identify mission aligned philanthropic priorities; drive transformational support for key clinical, research, and education initiatives; and set, achieve, oversee, and report on all programmatic fundraising goals and activities.
- Participate in strategic planning with the Associate Vice President, Vice President, and Chief Development Officer; lead and execute projects in support of departmental and enterprise-wide goals.
- Implement complex fundraising initiatives and assess their effectiveness to inform strategy and continuous improvement.
- Represents the Mass Eye and Ear development program with board members, trustees, donors, and other key stakeholders. Regularly presents on fundraising priorities, strategy, and progress at board and leadership meetings and participates in donor engagement events, chair celebrations, Florida receptions, and other related events.
- Contribute thought leadership on projects beyond immediate scope of responsibility, identifying and addressing challenges with broad departmental impact.
Fundraising & Donor Engagement:
- Lead fundraising efforts to achieve growth goals for Mass Eye and Ear, in alignment with and in support of the broader Mass General Brigham Development Office strategy.
- Build strong partnerships with physicians, researchers and senior administrators to align fundraising priorities with institutional needs and effectively engage faculty in the philanthropic process.
- Mentor and coach faculty in fundraising strategy and donor engagement, helping them effectively communicate their work to philanthropic audiences.
- Actively manage a personal portfolio of prospects and donors for assigned clinical areas, including strategy development, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
- Successfully solicit and close a range of gifts, including unrestricted, planned (e.g., bequests, life income, gifts of assets), and capital gifts, in partnership with hospital leadership.
- Strengthen and enhance donor relationships to increase engagement and maximize philanthropic support.
- Deliver a seamless, personalized donor experience with a strong emphasis on exceptional stewardship, particularly for board members, high-impact donors, and donors supporting multiple MGB institutions.
- Develop cross-disciplinary, transformational fundraising opportunities in collaboration with senior stakeholders.
- Ensure accurate, timely documentation of donor activity and fundraising outcomes in Atlas.
- Contribute to event and volunteer council strategy, as appropriate.
Team Leadership & Operational Excellence:
- Lead, manage, and support a high-performing team of fundraisers to ensure achievement of individual and collective fundraising goals.
- Identify, develop, and retain the next generation of development leaders.
- Coach and guide direct reports in best practices for portfolio management, donor engagement, and fundraising execution.
- Participate in fiscal year operational planning and provide ongoing guidance throughout the process.
- Prepare and regularly update progress and performance reports.
- Actively participate in recruiting new staff within the team and across Development, as appropriate.
- Foster positive morale and resilience within the team, even during periods of high workload and organizational change.
Collaboration & Communications:
- Build and strengthen relationships with hospital leadership, volunteer leaders, physicians, researchers, and administrative directors.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across Development and MGB to advance programmatic and fundraising objectives.
- Participate actively in departmental meetings; engage in constructive dialogue, contribute to consensus-building, and follow through on action items.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with hospital staff, colleagues, and stakeholders at all levels.
- Amplify and steward the Mass Eye and Ear brand, preserving its identity while expanding its reach within and beyond the existing supporter community.

Annual fundraising and performance metrics will follow the established guidelines of the MGB Development Office.
Qualifications
This position requires 10+ years progressive experience within a large, complex organization, 5+ years of management experience and a bachelor’s degree. Experience in philanthropic development at an academic medical center and/or hospital preferred. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

- Judgment, tact and discretion in handling highly sensitive information, unflinching integrity, and proven ability to maintain utmost confidentiality
