Job Summary
Job Description Summary:
The invasive Cardiovascular Technologist acts as a critical member of the patient care team within the department, collaborates fully with the other care team members in assuring continuity of care for their patients. The invasive Cardiovascular Technologist promotes a philosophy of patient/family-focused care in all interactions with patients, families, and hospital personnel and focus on understanding and meeting customer needs.
Cath Lab Offers:
- State of the art technology that includes Philips and Siemens X-Ray system, IVUS, OCT and Intra Cardiac Echo (ICE)
- High Risk Coronary PCI Program: Intravascular Lithotripsy, Atherectomy, Impella, IABP and ECMO
- CTO Program
- Structural Program including: TAVR, Pulmonic, Mitral and Tricuspid Valve therapies, ASD/PFO closure and a robust Adult Congenital Heart program.
- Peripheral Program including: Carotid stenting, Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty (BPA), Pulmonary Embolism Thrombectomy and EKOS
- Pediatric Program in collaboration with Boston Children’s Hospital Cath Lab
What you will do:
1. Conducts equipment system warm-up and quality assurance procedures to established guidelines to ensure safe and effective equipment operation.
2. Assembles, calibrates and verifies the operation of hemodynamic and physiologic monitoring equipment. Adheres to JCAHO compliance regarding quality control of point-of-care testing. Troubleshoots equipment problems when needed. Notifies technical quality specialist of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed.
3. Conducts Universal Protocol, correctly identifying the patient and procedure by interviewing said patient and checking against requisition and patient ID band prior to the start of procedure. Orients the patient to the procedure room. Explains the exam to the patient, taking into consideration physical and emotional needs, and maintaining ethical standards (patient confidentiality and professional conduct.) at all times.
4. Maintains aseptic conditions conducting sterile preparation of patients for procedures. Adheres to Safety/Infection Control guidelines and standards while setting up sterile fields and working in the procedure area.
5. Properly positions, supports, and immobilizes patients to obtain desired cineangiograms and decrease patients’ discomfort. Adheres to Radiation Safety protocols set forth by the Massachusetts General Hospital Radiation Safety Officer. Places and positions protective lead shielding and adjusts collimators to protect unaffected parts of the body from ionizing radiation exposure and to optimize angiographic results. Under direct supervision of the attending physician steers procedure table and fluoroscopic c-arm.
6. Monitors and records electrocardiogram and hemodynamics as indicated by procedure protocol. Collects and analyzes patient specimens/tests for hemodynamic calculations and measurements. Independently performs intracardiac shunt and valve area calculations from data. Remains current on developments and trends in procedures, equipment, and physiologic cardiac monitoring.
7. Scrubs in as an additional operator to assist the primary physician including catheter/wire management, administration of contrast, and assisting the physician to expedite the case and improve the quality of care.
8. Under the supervision of the attending physician, enters demographic data from hospital record, edits hemodynamic information, and documents lesion location, event sequence, use of equipment and completion of cath report.
9. Maintains knowledge of related topics including, but not limited to: radiation safety, universal precaution, disposal of contaminated material, proper handling of requisitions (both before and after procedure), interpersonal skills, communications, and dealing with difficult situations. Participates in departmental education programs. Participates in research programs, quality assurance, and quality improvement projects within the department.
10. Consistent demonstrated competency in equipment use including but not limited to: biomedical hemodynamic and physiologic monitoring systems, coronary and peripheral angiography, angioplasty and stenting, intravascular ultrasound, intracardiac echocardiography, doppler measurement, fractional flow reserve measurement, rotoblator, directional debulking, and laser atherectomy, cryoplasty, thrombectomy, intracardiac biopsy, direct gas exchange oxygen consumption measurement, percutaneous valvuloplasty, patent foramen ovale, patent ductus arteriosus, and atrial septal defect closure, intra-aortic balloon pump, left ventricular assistive devices, coil embolization, and neurological cooling.
11. Remains up to date on the latest developments and trends. Annually attends two medical, technology, and cardiovascular seminars.
12. Assumes responsibility for on-call coverage, and remains flexible in all shift coverage and overtime as necessary.
13. Assists staff in the post catheterization management of patients
Qualifications
Education:
Associate's Degree Radiology required or Bachelor's Degree Radiology preferred

Experience:
Experience in an accredited cardiac catheterization laboratory or related field 0-1 year preferred

- Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients and promote interdisciplinary collaborative teamwork, including in emergent situations. Maintains effective working relations and communication with the department and other hospital personnel.

- Must demonstrate proficiency in the electronic medical record system and the hemodynamic system within 3 months.
- Ability to identify and diagnose potential problems with patients or equipment, adapts priorities and plans independently with minimal direction. Escalate appropriately to leadership or the vendor as required.
- Must be able to promote a customer/patient-oriented philosophy among all staff within the area.
- Must use independent judgment, creativity, and initiative in a variety of situations when assisting with patient procedures.
- Must be able to work under extremely stressful conditions.
- Must be able to understand and operate required equipment and information systems, including, but not limited to, Mobile Aspects, Syngo dynamics, x-ray, biomedical hemodynamic system, catheter-based ultrasound, and additional modalities.
- Must be physically capable of lifting (linen, supplies, patients, etc.).
- Must have the ability to work with adult, elderly patients, and critically ill patients. Must have the ability to work productively in emergency situations, such as cardiac and respiratory codes, and on-call situations.
