Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopedics business to establish a standalone orthopedics company, operating as De Puy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals. Should you accept this position, it is anticipated that, following conclusion of the transaction, you would be an employee of De Puy Synthes and your employment would be governed by De Puy Synthes employment processes, programs, policies, and benefit plans. In that case, details of any planned changes would be provided to you by De Puy Synthes at an appropriate time and subject to any necessary consultation processes.

Summary

The Payroll Senior Manager is accountable for the end‑to‑end delivery and governance of payroll services for a defined group of countries across multiple regions. This role provides senior leadership across regional payroll teams and vendors that support payroll administration, ensuring consistent service delivery, strong compliance, risk management, and excellent employee experience. This position acts as a strategic partner to the global process owner and senior stakeholders, enabling payroll standardization and transformation and serving as senior escalation point for complex operational, regulatory, or stakeholder issues for assigned regions.

The Payroll Senior Manager is responsible for:

1.

Payroll Operations & Service Delivery:

a. Own the end‑to‑end payroll delivery model across multiple regions, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant payroll processing.

b. Establish and monitor regional payroll performance against service levels, quality metrics, and risk indicators.

c. Serve as senior escalation point for complex payroll issues, material risks, and service breakdowns from senior stakeholders, driving timely resolution while ensuring alignment between business, HR, Finance, and operations teams.

2. Payroll Governance, Controls, & Compliance

a. Lead the design, implementation, and execution of payroll internal controls in accordance with global and country-specific policies.

b. Provide oversight of third‑party payroll providers across regions, ensuring performance, compliance, and contractual adherence.

c. Ensure full compliance with statutory, regulatory, and company requirements, including tax, garnishments, benefits, and retirement-related deductions.

d. Ensure consistent application of payroll governance, controls, and compliance standards across regions.

e. Oversee internal payroll audits and coordinate support for external audits, including regulatory, financial (e.g., PwC), workers’ compensation, pension, and government audits.

f. Ensure payroll documentation, records, and audit trails (electronic and physical) are complete, current, and audit-ready.

Stakeholder & Vendor Management:

a. Act as a trusted partner to local, regional, and global stakeholders, aligning expectations, managing risks, and resolving conflicts to meet business objectives.

b. Build and maintain effective relationships with local and international third‑party payroll service providers, ensuring contractual compliance and continuous service improvement.

c. Represent the payroll function in local, regional, and global forums (e.g., d. President’s Council, Campus Council, One HR, Finance Council, Talent Forums).

d. Perform other duties and strategic initiatives as assigned by Regional and Global Payroll Leadership

4. Transformation, Projects & Continuous Improvement

a. Lead complex payroll-related transformation projects, including implementations, transitions, system upgrades, enhancements, testing, and continuous improvement initiatives.

b. Partner with project, technology, HR, and finance teams to support system changes and ensure accurate data integration and payroll accounting entries into the general ledger.

c. Drive operational excellence by identifying risks, opportunities, and inefficiencies, translating insights into actionable improvements and sustainable solutions.

5.

People Leadership & Talent Management:

a. Lead and manage a matrixed payroll organization, including managers, supervisors, and individual contributors.

b. Own hiring, performance management, coaching, career development, succession planning, and resource allocation across assigned team.

c. Foster a high‑performing, inclusive culture grounded in accountability, continuous learning, and strong customer focus.

d. Promote engagement, inclusion, and high performance through clear goals, regular feedback, and development-oriented leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of 10 years of prior experience in Payroll, HR, and/or Finance operations.
  • A minimum of 5 years in a Management/People Leadership role is required.
  • Demonstrated success in leading complex, matrixed payroll organizations at scale.
  • Experience in managing external vendors is required
  • Strong expertise in payroll governance, controls, compliance, and audit frameworks.
  • Proven ability to manage executive stakeholders and navigate ambiguity.
  • Effective partnership and relationship-building skills, operating as a global leader with understanding & appreciation of different cultures, with the ability to influence others and drive outcomes.
  • Strong analytical, decision‑making, and problem‑solving capabilities.
  • Excellent English language written and verbal communication abilities, with strong presentation and facilitation skills and can speak to a diverse set of audiences
  • Experience in knowledge management systems and proficiency with compliance requirements (e.g. SOX, business controls, etc.) are preferred
  • Certification in the following areas are preferred: Payroll, Project Management, Analytics, Lean Six Sigma/Design Thinking.
