Job Description:

Illumina’s AI Center of Excellence is seeking a passionate and future thinking AI Engineer to deliver world class innovative solutions across the enterprise. In this role will provide technical expertise and oversight of the development of integrated software algorithms to structure, analyze and leverage data in product and systems applications in both structured and unstructured environments. Directs the use of machine language and statistical modeling techniques such as decision trees, logistic regression, and Bayesian analysis to develop and evaluate algorithms to improve performance, quality, data management and accuracy. Applies deep learning technologies to give computers the capability to visualize, learn and respond to complex situations. Adapts machine learning to areas such as virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, robotics, and other products that allow users to have an interactive experience.

This is an India-based role and candidates must be willing to work in a hybrid work setting with a few days per week in the office.

• Key Responsibilities

• Architect and develop complex AI agent systems for manufacturing automation and optimization

• Design and implement multi-agent orchestration frameworks for production environments

• Build and maintain ontologies and knowledge bases for domain-specific AI applications

• Lead technical initiatives from concept through production deployment

• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical best practices

• Collaborate with stakeholders across manufacturing, logistics, and engineering teams

• Drive innovation in AI agent capabilities and integration patterns

• Ensure scalability, reliability, and performance of AI systems in production

• Required Qualifications

• Experience: 5+ years in AI/ML development and deployment

• AI Agent Development: Proven track record of building AI agents with at least some production or near-production deployment experience

Technical Expertise:

• Strong proficiency in Python and modern software engineering practices

• Deep understanding of LLM architectures, fine-tuning, and prompt engineering

• Hands-on experience designing orchestration systems for multi-agent workflows

• Working knowledge of ontology design and knowledge representation

• Experience with deployment practices and taking systems beyond local development

• Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive experience within the AWS Technology Stack (MS Azure experience a plus)

• Model Context Protocol (MCP) - familiarity or experimentation (this is a cutting-edge, production experience not expected)

• Domain Knowledge: Background in healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, sales, supply chain, or customer service (strong plus but not required)

• Track record of leading technical projects or mentoring engineers

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines for AI/ML systems

• Publications, blog posts, or presentations on AI agent systems
