About the Team
Hub Spot’s Segments Group powers the Lists and Scoring experience across our CRM platform. The team builds and operates the systems that enable customers to create, manage, and use dynamic segments of their data at massive scale — forming the backbone of Hub Spot’s personalization and automation capabilities.
This is one of Hub Spot’s most technically challenging and high-impact areas. The team’s mission is to make “real-time” truly real, transforming list creation from minutes to seconds while supporting tens of millions of customer segments. Engineers here work on large-scale distributed systems that process huge volumes of data with low latency and high reliability.
About the Role
As a Staff Technical Lead, you will be a player-coach, leading a team of approximately 2-4 backend engineers while remaining deeply hands-on in technical design and implementation.
This role blends hands-on engineering (~75%) with technical leadership and influence (~25%). You’ll help shape architecture in a complex and evolving domain, guide engineers through ambiguity, and ensure we are always solving for the customer first — even when the systems underneath are anything but simple.
You will work closely with Product Managers, Designers, other Tech Leads, and cross-group partners to build scalable, reliable systems that unlock growth for both our customers and Hub Spot.
What You’ll Do

Act as the technical leader and architect for backend systems powering advanced marketing capabilities

Design and evolve scalable, resilient architectures that integrate with complex marketing, machine learning, and data systems

Stay deeply hands-on in code, reviews, and technical design, setting a high bar for quality and execution

Lead and mentor engineers through ambiguous problem spaces, helping them break down complexity into clear, actionable solutions

Partner closely with Product, Design, Data, ML, and Infrastructure teams to deliver cohesive, customer-centric experiences

Drive alignment across teams and systems, identifying leverage points that unlock outsized impact

Balance short-term delivery with long-term platform health and technical strategy

Is comfortable working in high-ambiguity domains, particularly where product, data, and marketing technologies intersect

Can understand complex system landscapes and distill them into simple, scalable architectures

Stays deeply hands-on while also providing technical direction, mentorship, and influence beyond their immediate team

Demonstrates pragmatic decision-making with a bias toward solving problems through technology rather than process

Tech Stack (Experience, Not Expertise)
We leverage technologies such as Java, Kafka, Iceberg, Spark, distributed data stores, and service-oriented architectures. You don’t need to be an expert in every tool, but you should bring strong engineering fundamentals and a willingness to learn and apply new technologies to complex problems.
Pay & Benefits
The cash compensation below includes base salary, on-target commission for employees in eligible roles, and annual bonus targets under Hub Spot’s bonus plan for eligible roles. In addition to cash compensation, some roles are eligible to participate in Hub Spot’s equity plan to receive restricted stock units (RSUs). Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay. Individual compensation packages are tailored to your skills, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons.

Annual Cash Compensation Range:$237,600—$380,200 USD
