HNP Rebele Editorial AI Development Intern
The Hearst Newspapers (HNP) Dev Hub is hiring an Editorial AI Development Intern for the summer season who is passionate about local news, journalism and service to our communities. In this role, you’ll contribute hands-on engineering support to extend and strengthen our growing suite of editorial AI services and newsroom tools.
The HNP Dev Hub is a team of engineers, developers, designers, project managers and content strategists who collaborate with local newsrooms to create best-in-class digital experiences. We make things like election results pages, searchable databases, severe weather trackers, alternative story formats and whatever else you can dream up. You can learn more about the Dev Hub here.
This internship is paid through the Stanford Rebele Internship Program. To be eligible, candidates must be current Stanford University students.
The Skillset
Ideal candidates will be able to showcase some of the following. We do not expect candidates to be proficient in every area.

Experience using Python to build or extend APIs and interact with remote services.

Familiarity with prompt design, evaluation workflows or AI product prototyping.

Understanding of RESTful services, JSON, and basic web architecture.

Working knowledge of Git and Github.

Experience in a modern newsroom (including student publications) or a related work environment.

Ability to self-manage and handle multiple projects and fast deadlines.

Comfort with Slack, Zoom and Google Sheets.

Any experience with the following tools/systems is a plus:
AI-integrated IDEs (Github Copilot, Cursor).
- AWS systems such as S3, EC2, Lambda.
The Responsibilities

Hands-on engineering support for our editorial AI initiatives.

Extending and hardening existing editorial AI services and APIs.

Prototyping newsroom-facing AI workflows (e.g., Slack-based alerts, utilities and reporting tools).

Contributing to internal tooling that makes our development processes more repeatable and scalable.

Writing clear internal documentation to support adoption and maintainability.

Supporting experimentation and evaluation of AI-driven newsroom utilities.

Collaborate with team members on data-driven AI projects.

Learn how to create digital tools and experiences to make communities stronger and readers’ lives easier.

The Basics

This position is full time and paid: $21.25/hour.

This position is 40 hours a week, typically Monday through Friday.

The internship will be hosted over 10 weeks between June 1 and Aug. 31.
