Robotics Lab Manager
About the role
Job Summary
Job Description: Lab Management Services
Job Title: Lab Manager
Location: Mountainview, CA (On-site), MA (On-site)
Role Overview:
We are seeking a highly technical, mechanically minded Robotics Lab Manager to oversee our state-of-the-art robotics facility. The core mission of this lab is high-fidelity data collection to train the next generation of robotic behaviors. As the operational linchpin of the facility, you will bridge the gap between multiple specialized units: the Engineering Team (building infrastructure and gantries), to the scenes for the Data Collection and Support (repairing and calibrating the setup).
In this role, you won’t just be organizing a space; you will actively conceptualize physical infrastructure, manage high-value inventory, and ensure our humanoid fleet is safe and ready for continuous operation. If you are an engineering-focused problem solver who thrives at the intersection of hardware, lab operations, and cross-functional program management, you will be right at home in this role.
Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
Facilitate and organize lab spaces to ensure optimal layout, cleanliness, and the utmost care for all humanoid robotics.
Work closely with technical personnel, researchers, and program managers to design and build physical lab infrastructure, including safety gantries, mechanical hookups, specialized data collection scenes and other needed infra.
Understand, catalog, and meticulously manage all hardware, components, and physical inventory associated with the lab.
Ensure all requirements are met and maintained around lab equipment, strictly managing maintenance and calibration schedules to keep data collection operations running smoothly.
Take ultimate responsibility to ensure all safety measures—especially regarding heavy gantries and active humanoids—are in place, continually monitored, and strictly followed by all personnel.
Manage the sensitivities around prototype hardware and equipment. Enforce policies and procedures to ensure zero damage or disruption to fragile, high-value humanoid units.
Conduct initial experiments on lab equipment and components, stepping in to triage mechanical, operational, or hardware issues before escalating to specialized
engineering tiers.
Train the extended workforce (including teleoperators and wranglers) on the safe operation of robotics and hardware. Develop, maintain, and iterate on standard operating processes and best practices for all lab personnel.
Skill Requirements
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Educational Background: Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent practical, hands-on experience.
Hardware & Mechanical Expertise: Deep understanding of physical infrastructure construction. You should have experience building structural frames (e.g., 80/20 aluminum extrusion), rigging, and performing basic mechanical troubleshooting.
Lab/Facilities Management: Proven track record of managing a complex hardware, prototype, or robotics lab, including meticulous inventory tracking and procurement.
Cross-Functional Leadership: Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate requirements and coordinate seamlessly between researchers, program managers, and engineering/operations teams.
Safety-Oriented Mindset: Strong background in establishing, documenting, and enforcing hardware safety protocols in a dynamic, moving-parts environment.
