As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. The Compute Infrastructure and Spatial Flexibility team focuses on resource management and workload orchestration across the entire Google fleet. Our open PhD opportunities fall into a few main categories: optimizing infrastructure efficiency and reliability, advancing capabilities for large-scale Machine Learning (ML) and confidential computing, and strategic global capacity planning. A successful engineer for these roles would have a background in distributed systems, familiarity with scheduling and orchestration systems such as Kubernetes (k8s), and an interest in optimization and efficiency of the whole fleet all the way down to the node.

Responsibilities

• Participate in, or lead design reviews with peers and stakeholders to decide amongst available technologies.

• Develop, test, integrate, and release these solutions.

• Advocate your ideas to others when cooperation and coordination is required.

• Code in C++ or Golang or Java.

Minimum qualifications

• Experience with software design.

• Experience in computer science, data structures and algorithms.

• Experience with coding.

Preferred qualifications

• Currently enrolled in or graduated from a PhD program.

• Experience in concurrency, multithreading and synchronization.
