As a Research Scientist, you'll setup large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly, managing deadlines and deliverables while applying the latest theories to develop new and improved products, processes, or technologies. From creating experiments and prototyping implementations to designing new architectures, our research scientists work on real-world problems that span the breadth of computer science, such as machine (and deep) learning, data mining, natural language processing, hardware and software performance analysis, improving compilers for mobile platforms, as well as core search and much more.

As a Research Scientist, you'll also actively contribute to the wider research community by sharing and publishing your findings, with ideas inspired by internal projects as well as from collaborations with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes all over the world.

The role will work across hardware, software, and operations teams to deliver and validate quantum computing system platforms aligned with the QAI roadmap. You will work with technical leads to develop the system architecture requirements from functional requirements. You will also coordinate with software teams to ensure software tools enable the system to operate and achieve its goals requirements. As a partner to project and product managers, you will develop system program plans with associated metrics for transparent tracking of progress. You'll work with stakeholders to plan requirements, identify risks, manage project schedules, and communicate clearly with cross-functional partners across the organization.

The full potential of quantum computing will be unlocked with a large-scale computer capable of complex, error-corrected computations. Google Quantum AI's mission is to build this computer and unlock solutions to classically intractable problems. Our roadmap is focused on advancing the capabilities of quantum computing and enabling meaningful applications.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $262,000-$365,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

• Provide technical oversight of design, development, and system integration activities to deliver a functioning quantum computing platform.

• Translate functional objectives into a system architecture that defines specific component requirements.

• Collaborate with hardware and software teams to ensure all subsystems are integrated into a functional and performant system.

• Develop and drive realistic schedules and commitments based on strategy, available resources, and the demonstrated capacity of the team.

• Anticipate potential issues and propose solutions, manage dependencies and cross-functional interfaces, and identify opportunities to improve tools or processes.

Minimum qualifications

• PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

• 8 years of experience in developing systems hardware systems engineering, software integration, and testing.

• 8 years of experience with integrating multiple custom technologies into a hardware system.

• Experience translating technical objectives into component functional and performance requirements for systems.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience building and operating quantum computing systems.

• Ability to work across technical and business teams to deliver hardware systems to schedule and specification.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to travel as needed.
