About the job

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

At “Developer AI” we make software development at Google radically more efficient, powered by AI. We are applied ML teams who work closely with research teams and product teams at Google. Our team's goal is to apply ML techniques (especially large language models) to improve developer productivity.

You and the team will collaborate with other research and product teams on prototypes employing new research in Large Language Models (LLMs) for code. For some prototypes you will identify relevant clients who might help iterate on the prototypes by either providing feedback, or in some cases actively engaging in the development. Productionization will include building data pipelines, potentially ML training and evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Solve highly ambiguous technical challenges, applying LLMs to produce code edits.

  • Set the technical direction and goals for the team to solve high-impact use cases for Google. Engage with leads in other teams to identify opportunities and collaborate effectively.

  • Collaborate with other research and product teams on prototypes employing new research in LLMs for code.

  • Identify relevant clients who might help iterate on the prototypes by either providing feedback, or in some cases actively engaging in the development. Productionisation will include building data pipelines, potentially ML training and evaluation.

  • Work benefits from some experience in producing AI features, including analyzing offline and online experiments.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.

  • 8 years of experience in software development.

  • 5 years of experience testing and launching software products.

  • 5 years of experience in the machine learning field.

  • 5 years of experience developing with Python.

  • 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with the lifecycle of building products with machine learning (e.g., idea, prototype, evaluations, data-driven experimentation).

  • Experience with Google infrastructure and building scalable distributed systems.

  • Experience with data analysis and natural language processing.

  • Experience with machine learning and developer tools.

  • Experience with C++, Go, or Python.

  • Experience with technical leadership.
