In this role, you will build the core execution sandboxes and I/O interfaces that power Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, and App Engine. You will be operating at a massive scale, managing 5+ million Queries Per Second (QPS) and 200+ million daily container startups, and will be an underlying platform that makes it all possible. You will also unlock the future of AI by providing a seamless, GPU-enabled container serving platform for rapid model inference.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $174,000-$252,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

Design, implement, and maintain the highly reliable sandbox environments that power Cloud Run, Google App Engine, and Cloud Functions.

Improve the performance, reliability, and feature set of virtual machine interfaces related to storage, networking, memory management, and process interactions.

Apply software principles and systems programming (primarily in C++ and Go) to optimize code paths and implement core execution features.

Debug systems issues, understand root causes, and build resilient solutions.

Contribute to the ongoing convergence and modernization of the underlying platform capabilities across the Google Cloud Serverless portfolio.
Minimum qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
-
5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages, with a focus on building systems in C++, Go, or Java.

3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture in a production environment.

3 years of experience with developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage or hardware architecture.

Experience with low-level systems programming on Linux or other Unix-like operating systems.
Preferred qualifications
-
Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, or a related technical field.

5 years of experience with data structures and algorithms applied to performance optimization and memory management in high-throughput systems.

1 year of experience in a technical leadership role, managing cross-functional engineering initiatives or guiding architectural decisions.

Experience developing accessible technologies and fostering engineering practices.

Experience with virtualization concepts (e.g., Kernel-Based Virtual Machines), containerized workloads (e.g., Docker and Kubernetes), and troubleshooting operating system or storage internals.
