About the job

Technical writers plan, create, and maintain educational content as an integral part of the engineering or user experience. The content is often in the form of documentation, but may also be UI text, sample code, videos, or other educational material. Regardless of the content medium, technical writers are distinguished by their abilities to explain complex topics in a way that’s useful to their audience.

The TI Systems Infrastructure team designed the architecture behind everything our users see online. From developing and maintaining our data centers to building the next generation of Google platforms, we make Google's product portfolio possible.

As a Technical Writer, you will assist in developing hardware documentation to support Google's expanding infrastructure needs. You will work with hardware engineers, technical project managers, and other technical writers to create high quality documentation to support Technical Infrastructure (TI) and Cloud AI/ ML projects.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $105,000-$151,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

Responsibilities

  • Document hardware systems, including server and networking infrastructure, and specialized components like liquid cooling systems.

  • Manage multiple engaging priorities in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment. Write, publish, and maintain high-quality documentation and online content.

  • Edit, clarify, and proofread documents written by others, and coach non-writers on ways to improve their writing skills.

  • Conduct audience analysis and cater documentation deliverables to the audience’s needs. Work closely with engineers to create product requirements documents (PRDs), design specs, deployment and installation guides, operation and maintenance procedures, and product briefings.

  • Travel up to 15% to Google Data Centers as needed.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 4 years of experience in technical writing, product documentation, online publishing, or technical blogging, with a portfolio of writing examples.

  • Experience with AI/ML hardware accelerators (e.g., TPUs, GPUs) and their specific infrastructure and deployment requirements.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience documenting liquid cooling systems for data centers.

  • Experience with integrating photography, videos, and conceptual graphics into documentation deliverables.

  • Experience with HTML, Markdown, and Content Management System file management.

  • Experience writing for hardware engineers, mechanical engineers, thermal engineers, technical project managers, data center technicians, and industry tradespeople with an understanding of data center power, cooling, and rack-level infrastructure.

  • Familiarity with AI technologies to create and maintain documentation with the ability to write in a range of styles and tones, from technical to informal prose.

  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, support multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
