About the job

Google has one of the largest and most powerful computing infrastructures in the world. Your team is responsible for providing the manufacturing capability to deliver this state-of-the-art physical infrastructure. As a Manufacturing Engineer, you evaluate the product designs and create the processes, tools and procedures behind Google's powerful search technology. When vendors build parts for our infrastructure, you're right there alongside ensuring manufacturing processes are repeatable and controlled. You collaborate with Commodity Managers and Design Engineers to determine Google's infrastructure needs and product specifications. Your work ensures the various pieces of Google's infrastructure fit together perfectly and keep our systems humming along smoothly for a seamless user experience.

In this role, you will be the primary technical link between Google’s Engineering teams and our manufacturing partners in China. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the hardware that powers Google's future devices by ensuring our battery technology meets the highest safety and performance standards while scaling for global production. You will leverage your expertise in battery cell/pack manufacturing and supplier management to drive continuous improvement and technical innovation.

The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end quality management for battery cell and pack suppliers, overseeing the transition from initial sourcing and NPI audits to high-volume mass production.

  • Drive technical excellence by evaluating battery product designs (DFx) and developing manufacturing processes (coating, winding, aging) to ensure scalability and performance.

  • Implement comprehensive quality control plans and lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective Actions (CAPA) for technical failures at vendor sites using statistical tools like JMP or Minitab.

  • Optimize manufacturing yields during early development and production phases through process qualification and failure analysis tracking.

  • Facilitate global collaboration by serving as the primary technical liaison between US-based Product Engineering teams and Asia-based suppliers, ensuring alignment on quality standards and delivery timelines.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 8 years of experience in battery cell or pack manufacturing, quality engineering, or supplier development.

  • Experience with lithium-ion battery chemistries and manufacturing processes (e.g., coating, electrolyte filling, formation).

  • Ability to travel to supplier sites as required.

Preferred qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related engineering field.

  • Experience in technical leadership, project management, and executive communication.

  • Experience in managing or working at tier-1 battery suppliers for global consumer electronics brands.

  • Expertise in Design for Excellence (DFx), design for manufacturing, assembly, testing) and Failure Analysis (FA).

  • Ability to communicate in English and Mandarin fluently to bridge technical discussions between US engineering and local vendors.
