As a Staff Backend Engineer at Gong, you will play a pivotal role in revolutionizing how companies understand their customer interactions. You will be instrumental in designing and leading the development of scalable systems, working with cutting-edge technologies, and collaborating with cross-functional teams across the organization to solve high-impact problems.

You’ll Own:

  • Technical Strategy & Architecture: Driving the architectural vision for complex systems, ensuring they remain scalable, reliable, and maintainable as we grow.

  • Core Backend Infrastructure: Designing and implementing high-performance services and APIs using Java, Spring Boot, and modern cloud technologies.

  • Technology Exploration: Researching and integrating emerging technologies, including AI/ML capabilities and advanced APIs, into our current stack.

You’ll Solve:

  • System Scalability: Tackling the challenges of high-performance backend design.

  • Complex Cross-Functional Alignment: Bridging the gap between Product, GTM, and R&D groups to develop tailored solutions that satisfy both internal and external stakeholders.

  • Architectural Debt: Making critical decisions that prevent bottlenecks and ensure the long-term health of our distributed systems.

You’ll Impact:

  • Team Technical Bar: Elevating the engineering organization through direct mentorship and by setting high-level standards for best practices.

  • Innovation Velocity: Leading the charge in adopting new methodologies and AI capabilities that keep our product at the cutting edge.

  • Strategic Growth: Directly influencing the company's ability to scale by building the foundational services that power our most complex product initiatives.

How You’ll Succeed Here:

  • 12+ years of backend software development experience, with a strong foundation in Java and Spring Boot.

  • 4+ years of experience as a staff / principal engineer, preferably in an enterprise SaaS environment, leading cross-functional and cross-feature initiatives.

  • Proven experience in leading technical projects and mentoring engineers.

  • Extensive experience developing and maintaining large-scale, cloud-based web applications.

  • A creative problem-solving mindset and a passion for researching technologies.

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (preferred).

  • Excellent communication skills and a team-oriented mindset, with strong verbal and written proficiency in English.

  • A collaborative approach, enjoying regular interaction with a diverse range of stakeholders.
