Introduction

The Quantum Ion Trap Technology Architect is a senior-level, subject matter expert role within the GF Labs Technology Architecture organization. This role is responsible for advancing quantum ion trapping technologies from fundamental research through scalable, manufacturable architectures. The position requires deep technical expertise, hands-on research leadership, and the ability to translate emerging quantum concepts into practical engineering solutions.

Job Summary

The PMTS Quantum Ion Trapping role leads the definition, development, and maturation of ion-trap-based quantum technologies. The position works across device physics, materials, fabrication, packaging, and system architecture to enable next-generation quantum platforms. This engineer serves as a technical authority and architect, influencing long-term technology roadmaps and external research engagements.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop and influence long-term quantum technology roadmaps focused on ion trapping platforms.

  • Shape next generation ion trapping technologies, including device concepts, architectures, and fabrication approaches.

  • Define and drive experiments, simulations, and prototypes to improve qubit performance, scalability, reliability, and manufacturability.

  • Serve as a primary technical interface with customers, ensuring alignment on program objectives, milestones, and deliverables throughout execution.

  • Act as a senior technical interface with academic institutions, government laboratories, and industry partners.

  • Contribute to joint development programs, research proposals, and externally funded initiatives.

  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to stakeholders across engineering, management, and external organizations.

  • Serve as a PMTS-level technical leader, setting engineering standards and best practices for quantum R&D.

  • Mentor junior engineers, researchers, and technical staff in quantum device development.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: MS or PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or Materials Science

  • Years of Experience: 12+

  • Percentage of travel: 15%

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in quantum devices/physics with evidence of industrialization or tech transfer.

  • Experience with quantum computing architectures, control systems, or cryogenic / vacuum environments.

  • Experience working with academic research groups or government-funded research programs.

  • Publications or patents in quantum technologies, ion trapping, or advanced device platforms.

Expected Salary Range

$143,000.00 - $275,000.00
