
Automation & Controls Engineering Specialist
About the role
OVERVIEW: The Automation & Controls Engineering Specialist in the JFB Shop is responsible for design, implementation, and troubleshooting of controls systems for proprietary machines designed and fabricated by the Equipment Technology and Innovation Group. Additionally, this hands-on role will integrate, troubleshoot, modify, and improve OEM equipment throughout General Mills. The role will report into the Equipment Technology and Innovation Group Manager and have dotted line accountability to the Controls & IS Technology Manager within Global Technical Services, assisting with driving innovation and setting strategy in the automation space. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: Proactively drive and lead safety, especially electrical and controls safety Design and integration of controls systems in partnership with GMI project engineers and external suppliers Project management (scope, schedule, budget) of controls systems for equipment built in the JFB Shop Develop electrical drawings for automation systems and panel layouts Develop controls system functional descriptions for internally designed equipment\ Develop PLC code and HMI visualization for proprietary machinery utilizing Allen-Bradley Logix Controllers and Aveva In Touch & Apps Server Hands-on troubleshooting of controls systems throughout the company Travel to field locations to support the installation and start-up of equipment Train other employees on the maintenance and troubleshooting of automation systems Mentoring of Controls technicians in the Shop, Pilot Plant, and in GMI field locations MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate in Applied Science degree from an accredited vocational school, two-year community college, or equivalent training from the military or acceptable program 8+ years in a food processing/industrial environment A strong knowledge of electrical safety regulations including NEC and NFPA70E, NFPA79 Proficiency with use of Allen-Bradley PLC platforms (Control Logix, Compact Logix, PLC5) Proficiency is configuring and troubleshooting EthernetIP, Device Net, and Control Net Proficiency in setting up and configuring Wonderware IO servers and related communications Proficiency in configuring servo motion control (AB Kinetix platform) Demonstrated proficiency in use of hand tools, power tools, and a digital multimeter Experience with process or packaging systems analysis and optimization in a manufacturing setting Demonstrated technical leadership, team facilitation skills, adaptability, analytical and problem-solving skills, troubleshooting, communications, and interpersonal relations. Must be effective working in a plant floor environment for a significant portion of the job Ability to travel and lead work globally. Anticipated travel level is less than 15% but may come in surges during project implementations PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: MN Class A Master, Class A Journey worker, or Maintenance Electrician License Significant experience leading work in a controls integrator role Robotics programming experience Field experience with GMI proprietary equipment COMPANY OVERVIEW
