Job Description:
Head of Billing
We are looking for an experienced senior leader who is passionate about the strategic use of data, people, and processes to lead a complex, high-scale, and control intensive billing function that supports a number of Fidelity’s businesses and products. This role is accountable for the accuracy, integrity, and resiliency of billing operations that process billions of dollars in revenue annually and will help to evolve billing into a strategic platform capability that enables growth, transparency, and speed to market. As part of this evolution, you will be the sponsor of our multi-year billing modernization program, driving straight-through processing and increased scale and efficiency within the billing function. Central to this will be partnering with the billing team and technology groups to create a roadmap that enables meaningful incremental process improvements and eliminates manual processes. This roadmap must balance modernization and automation with strong governance, risk management, and control design, ensuring operational resilience while enabling greater flexibility and scalability for new products, pricing models, and partnerships. The Head of Billing is expected to maintain an unwavering focus on controls, audit readiness, and regulatory compliance, while also challenging the organization to rethink how billing capabilities can reduce friction, improve client experience, and support strategic business outcomes.
The Team
The Fidelity Institutional billing team is a centralized function which supports the billing and the revenue collection for the Funds Network platform; the revenue and expense charges for our Clearing and Custody clients; the Third-Party payments for Fidelity Advisor; and the billing and collection of 12b-1 trails. The team that is supporting this function is highly engaged in automation efforts, working across the Fidelity enterprise to ensure appropriate controls are built into the negotiation, pricing and contracting processes to ensure a streamlined, supportable billing setup. The team works with many of the operations groups that support the functions on our brokerage platform. It is critical to have an understanding of back-office processes to ensure the billing system is billing correctly and to forecast how changes made may impact billing processes. The team also works closely with a diverse set of product teams to ensure billing can effectively support the products at launch. The overarching mission of the team is to adhere to the client contracts and ensure Fidelity is billing appropriately for the services we are providing. The associates within the team are responsible for billing our clients, providing outstanding service by responding quickly to their inquiries, collaborating with finance and accounting, and being available to assist on any audit requests. This role will lead the team through evolution and will help shape how billing is viewed across Fidelity —not only as a critical operational and financial control function, but as a strategic enabler of product innovation, partner relationships, and long-term growth.
The Expertise You Have
- Demonstrated experience leading complex, high-risk billing or revenue operations in a highly regulated environment, with deep appreciation for controls, audit, and regulatory expectations.
- Experience partnering with Product, Technology, Finance, Risk, and Legal teams to translate complex pricing, contractual, and regulatory requirements into scalable billing solutions.
- Ability to systematically gather information from a variety of sources, analyze information, identify implications of data, draw conclusions, generate alternatives and solutions, and evaluate the consequences of choosing each alternative using quality metrics and data.
- Looks for opportunities to innovate and take thoughtful, well-governed risks to get things done better and faster using a minimum viable product approach, without compromising accuracy, controls, or client trust.
- Demonstrated ability to partner across multiple teams and business units to develop coordinated approaches and solutions
- Ability to think strategically about platform capabilities and business outcomes while maintaining discipline around risk management and operational integrity.
- Demonstrated effectiveness at driving operational efficiencies across the organization
- Creative leader that comfortably uses data to make decisions and balanced story telling
- Significant experience in building and leading an operational or billing team in support of financial and strategic processes and initiatives
- Passion for excellence and a desire to learn and to improve support strategies, processes, and procedures. You must be adaptable to change, work well under pressure, and be able to multi-task, while maintaining a positive outlook.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance/Accounting or equivalent and 15+ years of experience, or master’s degree with 12+ years of experience
- Series 27 preferred or ability to obtain license within 3-6 months with manager approval
The Skills You Bring
- Executive level presence, communication, and organizational skills to effectively influence firm leadership on prudent courses of action.
- Outstanding leadership and management skills who can recruit, retain, mentor, and develop talent.
- Significant experience leading operational teams and large initiatives
- Business and technology savvy strategic problem solver who drives innovative process and technology solutions within a strong risk, control, and governance framework.
- High-energy, positive, and entrepreneurial in spirit, while goal-oriented and results-driven. Balances pace over perfection within a risk-based decision framework that separates the critical and important from the trivial.
- Impactful communicator who is direct, plain spoken, and “tells it like it is” with a genuine/authentic demeanor, while enabling candid debate. Know when and how to raise and escalate a problem with creative solutions.
The Value You Deliver
- Billing processes – Execute and lead all aspects of the billing program across Fidelity Institutional, ensuring accuracy, resiliency, and strong controls while continuously evolving the billing platform to better support business and client needs.
- Support new business & product growth – Serve as a strategic thought partner to product and business leaders, helping shape pricing and commercial models that are operationally sound, scalable, and well-controlled. Define, build and deploy new revenue opportunities. Define project plan and deliverables for MVP and beyond, committing billing resources to support the product as needed and ensuring the product teams are well versed in the billing processes.
- Talent – Evaluate, upgrade and encourage talent across a team of billing and finance professionals. Success will depend on identifying and developing high quality successors for key roles, developing needed skills, crafting a culture of inclusion, and growing associate mobility.
- Help drive the billing technology strategy and roadmap to effectively and efficiently support our business, balancing modernization and simplification with operational stability, regulatory expectations, and risk management, and enabling the billing team to reduce manual tasks and create straight-through processing.
