Senior Payroll Tax Analyst
Role Summary
The Senior Payroll Tax professional serves as a subject‑matter expert responsible for payroll tax compliance matters across multiple jurisdictions. This role independently resolves escalated tax issues, partners directly with government agencies, and applies deep regulatory knowledge to prevent recurring compliance risks. The position plays a key role in audit readiness, reconciliation accuracy, and long‑term process improvement.
Key Responsibilities

Apply knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations to resolve notices, document policy changes, and assist Tax Manager with complex compliance scenarios.

Work with state workforce agencies, departments of revenue, and local taxing authorities to resolve account discrepancies, filing rejections, and payment issues.

Investigate and remediate payroll tax exceptions, including missed or late filings, inaccurate unemployment tax rates, and company profile inconsistencies.

Perform analysis of payment activity to identify and resolve failed or delayed tax deposits, including ACH-related issues.

Proactively assess notice patterns to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions that reduce repeat agency correspondence.

Execute quarterly and annual payroll tax reconciliations to ensure accurate and timely tax filing.

Monitor tax code exceptions and compliance fallouts by coordinating agency registrations, reconciling applied deposits, and ensuring proper tax setup.
Experience & Education
-
5+ years of experience in payroll tax filing administration, payroll tax research, or payroll tax compliance, preferably within a high‑volume, multi‑state environment.

High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree in business, taxation, human resources, or a related field preferred.
-
Active FPC or CPP certification, or a demonstrated commitment to obtain certification within two years.

Proven experience working directly with state and local agencies, including departments of revenue, labor, or workforce development.

Hands‑on experience navigating agency portals and electronic tax filing platforms.

Experience with tax filing software (eg. Mastertax, i Solved) highly desirable.
