Introduction to the team

Expedia Group has a mission to become the world’s travel platform. As part of that effort, Expedia Group’s Data organization is building a unified platform for all Expedia brands to capture, enrich, and leverage data for AI, data science, and programmatic applications.

As a Software Development Engineer III, you will join the Marketing Data Engineering team within the Expedia Group Marketing organization. This team focuses on building a next-gen analytics platform – a consolidated suite of products designed to facilitate experimentation analysis, campaign performance measurement, incentive forecasting, and scenario planning.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, build, and support scalable, reliable and durable data solutions to support self-service consumption, leveraging cloud-based technologies
  • Support Expedia Group’s product and business teams’ specific data needs on a global scale
  • Collaborate closely with teams across engineering, product, and business functions
  • You will be encouraged to propose improvements to designs and processes; actively participate as a key team member in all agile ceremonies, code and design reviews
  • Apply software design principles, data structures and/or design patterns and computer science fundamentals to write code that is clean, maintainable, optimized, modular with good naming conventions
  • Recommend and apply architectural patterns or GenAI capabilities to improve system design and innovation
  • Enhance service reliability through observability, automation, and continuous operational improvements
  • Participate in on-call support of team’s services through Pager Duty rotation

Minimum qualifications:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering with a Bachelor's degree in a technical field (or equivalent experience); or 3+ years with a Master's.
  • Experience building data pipelines or data products in a production environment, ideally in cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language relevant to data engineering (e.g., Python, Java, or Scala), and familiar with data processing tools such as Apache Spark, Kafka, or Airflow.
  • Experienced in batch & streaming processing and modern data architectures, distributed systems, and data access patterns.
  • Experienced with Advanced SQL and working with both traditional RDBMS and distributed data storage systems.
  • Experience building front-end and/or backend services, with a strong understanding of APIs as products.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with product partners to clarify and refine functional requirements.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Languages: Java, Scala, Python
  • Frameworks: Apache Spark, Spring, FastAPI
  • Database: SQL, NoSQL, and Distributed storage (e.g., Iceberg, Hive, Parquet, Avro)
  • Protocols: RESTful/Open API web services, GraphQL and gRPC
  • Infrastructure: EC2 (compute), S3 (storage), Kubernetes and Docker
  • Generative AI: Prompt Engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Agentic AI
