Primary Purpose
The Director, Benefits Administration is accountable for the enterprise-wide governance, delivery, and continuous improvement of the company’s employee benefits administration function. This role ensures compliant, accurate, and high-quality administration of health and welfare, retirement and related benefit programs while delivering a strong employee experience.
The Director leads the benefits administration team, governs third-party administrators and vendors, and serves as the primary operational authority for benefits administration. In addition, the role partners closely with Benefits Strategy, providing operational insight, data, and feasibility assessments to inform benefit design decisions and long-term strategy.
Primary Duties Enterprise Benefits Administration Leadership
Leads and oversees the administration of the company’s health and welfare (medical, dental, vision, life, disability), retirement (defined contribution and pension, as applicable), and related benefit programs. Accountable for operational accuracy, service delivery, compliance, and the end-to-end participant experience across all benefits programs.
Vendor, Carrier, and TPA Governance
Provides enterprise governance of third-party administrators, carriers, and external vendors. Establishes performance expectations, enforces service-level agreements, leads vendor reviews, and drives resolution of escalated operational and service issues. Partners with Procurement and Legal on vendor contracting, renewals, and performance management.
Compliance, Risk Management, and Controls
Ensures benefits administration complies with ERISA, IRS, DOL, ACA, COBRA, HIPAA, Sarbanes Oxley, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Oversees internal controls, audit readiness, regulatory responses, and remediation activities in partnership with Legal, Compliance, and Finance.
Operational Excellence and Process Design
Owns end to end benefits administration processes and workflows. Drives continuous improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, scalability, data integrity, and the colleague experience. Ensures operational readiness for open enrollment, system implementations, plan changes, and regulatory updates.
Benefits Strategy Support and Enablement
Partners with Benefits Strategy leadership to support benefit design and strategic initiatives by providing operational insights, administrative feasibility assessments, cost and risk considerations, and implementation planning. Acts as the bridge between benefits strategy and execution, ensuring decisions can be implemented efficiently and sustainably.
People Leadership and Stakeholder Partnership
Leads, coaches, and develops a team of benefits administration professionals. Sets direction, priorities, and performance expectations while building organizational capability. Serves as the senior benefits administration liaison to HR leadership, Labor, Compensation, Payroll, Finance, IT, and Communications.
Job Scope
Operates with significant independence and enterprise-wide influence. Establishes operational direction for benefits administration and contributes to benefit strategy through operational expertise. Leads a team of approximately 5–10 professionals and serves as the senior escalation point for benefits administration issues impacting the employee population.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in benefits administration, corporate benefits, or benefits consulting, including people leadership
- Deep expertise in health & welfare and/or retirement plan administration, compliance, and vendor governance
- Demonstrated success leading teams and influencing in a complex, matrixed enterprise
- Proven experience managing audits, regulatory compliance, and operational risk
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and executive communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) or similar professional certification
- Experience supporting unionized, regulated, or multi-entity environments
- Experience partnering on enterprise benefits strategy initiatives or transformations

- Annual salary will vary based on a candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience, and other factors: $160,000.00/Yr. – $220,000.00/Yr. plus an additional $50K in Long Term Incentive Plan annually
