Primary Purpose

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

  • Works on larger jobs, small projects; routines; under the guidance of an experienced engineer / technician, on electrical power distribution equipment and associated control circuits to ensure proper electrical operation.
  • Testing Group work is on transmission & distribution substation equipment.
  • Distribution Automation work is on distribution equipment, generally outside substations.
  • Thermographer work involves utilizing Infrared Thermography and Corona/UV scans on substation equipment.
  • Battery Specialist work maintains batteries and battery chargers inside substations
  • Corrosion Control Group work is on transmission & distribution equipment Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.

Primary Duties

PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES- Dist Automation

  • Performs well-defined testing assignments under the guidance of an experienced engineer / technician (e.g., preventive and corrective maintenance on supervisory distribution automation equipment. (70%)

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the current distribution system design (e.g., analyze and interpret field data gathered from well defined field tests) (20%)

  • Evaluate effectiveness of current technical systems and processes. Participate on teams (e.g., works with distribution engineering and manufacturers to implement new designs) (5%)

  • Participate in training (e.g., attend Com Ed, vendor and university classes; conduct training) (5%)
  • Testing Group
  • Perform preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance on distribution and transmission relays, communications equipment, power reclosers etc., using the guidelines listed in the Field Reference and the Maintenance Procedures manuals (35%)
  • Testing Group
  • Conduct basic hands-on acceptance and in-service testing of transmission and distribution equipment (e.g., transformers, circuit breakers, control and relay panels, SCADA, power line carrier, audio tone, etc.) Testing is performed per the guidelines included in the Field Reference Manual and the Maintenance Procedures Manuals. (20%)

  • Assist with the restoration of malfunctioning transmission and distribution equipment, under emergency conditions, by performing the necessary hands-on testing as outlined in the Field Reference and Maintenance Procedures manuals. (20%)

  • Receive, participate, and provide some on-the-job and formal classroom training (15%)

  • Complete required paperwork (reports, test data, blueprint corrections, relay settings, etc) as necessary to document work performed. (10%)

  • Perform preventative maintenance Infrared Thermography scans of substation equipment per assigned schedule (50%)

  • Maintain specified station batteries in a manner compliant to NERC requirements (70%)

  • Perform annual Preventative Maintenance battery inspections on station batteries & chargers per annual schedules. (10%)
  • Battery Specialist
  • Identify & Perform minor Corrective Maintenance on station and microwave batteries & chargers as necessary. (10%)
  • Battery Specialist
  • Assist Substation Construction and/or contractors as technical expert for major CM maintenance on station and microwave batteries & chargers. (10%)
  • Corrosion Control Group
  • Perform preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance on buried distribution and transmission lines, microwave towers, reverse current switches, ISPs, etc., using the guidelines listed in the Com Ed and Corrosion mitigation standards (35%)
  • Corrosion Control Group
  • Conduct basic hands-on acceptance and in-service testing of corrosion control equipment installed to protect buried transmission & HVD lines, as well as 4kV, 12kV & 34kV cables, CTA & Metra reverse current drainage systems, microwave towers.) Testing is performed per the guidelines included in the Com Ed and Corrosion mitigation standards. (35%)

  • Assist with the restoration of malfunctioning transmission and distribution equipment, by performing the necessary hands-on testing & repairs as outlined in the Com Ed and Corrosion mitigation standards. (20%)
  • Corrosion Control Group
  • Complete required paperwork (reports, test data entry, map corrections, rectifier settings, etc.) as necessary to document work performed. (5%)

  • Receive, participate, and provide some on-the-job and formal classroom training (5%)

Conduct CMs, PMs, and project installation testing activities on power equipment

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- A bachelor's degree in a technical field and 0-3 years of technical experience, an associate's degree and 2-5 years of technical experience, or 5-7 year of technical experience or relevant education, if non-degreed or a non-technical degree.

  • Successful completion of the TECH Test. (A Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university exempts the TECH Test requirement.)
  • Good knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, and practices necessary to perform assignments for a specific discipline for maintenance, testing, installation or service
  • Positions require the ability to read blueprints and schematics and use basic test instruments
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills
  • Valid driver's license
  • Requires frequent travel to various company substations or other locations within the service territory
  • Must be available to work shifts and respond to emergency situations (7 days per week / 24 hours per day)
  • Relevant education/experience is knowledge and/or skills that may be acquired through job experiences or education programs similar to a formal technical degree program. Relevant experience includes experience in a military role (transmission, distribution, gas, power systems, etc.), project management, journey-level electrician or gas technician, field operations, or other utility related experience, as deemed relevant to the role. Relevant educational experience includes company sponsored training programs (ex. Power Up Academy) or other educational programs, as deemed relevant to the role. The equivalent relevant education / experience requirement is in addition to the position's minimum experience requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology

  • Technical experience related to electrical power equipment.
  • Electrical troubleshooting experience preferred for Distribution Automation positions
