The Director of Tax Reporting & Cost Basis will lead multiple teams within the Operations division responsible for maintaining accurate cost basis records, administering tax lot accounting, executing tax reporting processes, and delivering client tax documents and regulatory filings. The Director will set and execute the strategic direction for these functions, oversee operational performance and regulatory compliance, and lead transformational initiatives that improve scalability, efficiency, risk management, and the client experience. This role serves on the Custody & Client Reporting senior leadership team and partners across Operations, Digital, Legal, Compliance, Risk, Product, and Service organizations to advance firm priorities and deliver effective change.

What you'll do:

  • Cost Basis Oversight
  • Oversee cost basis calculations, tax lot accounting methodologies, and cost basis tracking for investment products.
  • Oversee transfer cost basis, inherited asset cost basis adjustments, gifting transactions, corrections, exception resolution, and reconciliation activities.
  • Manage the cost basis impact of corporate actions and reorganizations, including mergers, spin-offs, stock splits, return-of-capital events, and other security restructurings.
  • Govern approved tax lot election methodologies and ensure accurate gain and loss information supports client and tax reporting.
  • Maintain effective operational controls supporting the accuracy and integrity of cost basis records.
  • Tax Reporting Oversight
  • Oversee annual tax reporting production and delivery processes, including the production and distribution of client tax documents.
  • Govern tax reporting data, client tax records, reporting controls, federal and state tax withholding reporting, and related reconciliations.
  • Lead tax form validation, quality assurance, defect management, and reconciliations between books and records and tax reporting systems.
  • Oversee regulatory filing deadlines, end-to-end tax reporting support, issue resolution, vendors, and service providers.
  • Strategy, Transformation, and Digital Innovation
  • Set and execute the strategy for tax reporting and cost basis as a senior leader within the Custody & Client Reporting capability.
  • Lead transformational change across the tax reporting and cost basis functions, including platform modernization, process redesign, and operational improvement.
  • Partner with Digital resources on the development and implementation of platforms and technology solutions that improve workflows and enhance branch and client experiences.
  • Allocate resources and establish priorities to support current responsibilities and future business needs.
  • Compliance and Legal Liaison
  • Collaborate with Compliance and Legal teams to ensure tax reporting and cost basis activities adhere to SEC, FINRA, IRS, and other applicable requirements.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures addressing operational risk, controls, due diligence, and investor protections.
  • Oversee the interpretation and implementation of regulatory changes affecting tax reporting and cost basis.
  • Leadership and Team Management
  • Set goals, allocate resources effectively, and ensure associates are trained on operational processes, compliance requirements, and emerging industry trends.
  • Mentor and develop leaders and associates while fostering accountability, collaboration, sound decision-making, and continuous improvement.
  • Drive results through multiple teams and maintain clear ownership for operational performance, risk, controls, and change execution.
  • Firm-Wide Collaboration
  • Serve as the SME for tax reporting and cost basis, providing insights and recommendations to senior Operations leadership and other divisions.
  • Work across divisions and the firm to align strategies, resolve complex issues, execute enterprise initiatives, and deliver shared outcomes.
  • Represent Operations in cross-functional meetings and initiatives related to tax reporting and cost basis.

What you'll need:

    • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience within broker-dealer operations, custody, tax reporting, client reporting, or related financial services functions.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multiple departments, functions, teams, and other leaders, with significant people responsibilities and a record of delivering results through others.
  • Experience planning, setting strategy and direction, and leading enterprise-wide efforts.
  • Experience leading large-scale transformation, technology modernization, and change management initiatives, including serving as a business leader for technology initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of broker-dealer operations, securities processing, cost basis, tax reporting, and operational risk management.
  • Experience working with executive leadership and cross-functional stakeholders, including Compliance and Legal teams on regulatory matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate future business needs related to capacity, talent, industry trends, and technology and to develop business cases aligned with firm strategies and objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead project leaders and internal and external stakeholders through complex issues, provide direction, and influence key decisions.
  • Ability to develop a long-term vision while applying a practical day-to-day strategic approach to issues and challenges.
  • SIE and Series 99 required within 89 days of start date (US); Series 7 required within 12 months of start date (US), Series 24 (U.S) and/or other certifications may be required depending upon specific responsibilities.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Deep knowledge of cost basis regulations, IRS reporting requirements, tax withholding regulations, and securities taxation.
  • Experience with tax reporting platforms, vendor-provided solutions, regulatory examinations, audits, and compliance programs.
  • Strategic vision for operational innovation and the ability to navigate complex regulatory environments, mitigate risk, and use technology to improve efficiency and the client experience.
