MTS 2 Software Engineer – e Bay
About the Role:
At e Bay, we’re redefining global commerce through technology. As a Staff Software Engineer in Buyer Payments org, you’ll design and build large-scale, distributed systems that power millions of customer interactions daily. You’ll shape technical strategy, drive innovation, and mentor engineers across teams to deliver seamless, performant, and accessible experiences for our global users.
Responsibilities
- Architect and Build: Design, develop, and maintain scalable, distributed, and highly available systems that ensure exceptional performance, reliability, and accessibility for e Bay’s marketplace platform.
- Technical Leadership: Translate complex business requirements into clean, efficient, and maintainable software solutions. Take ownership of large functional areas, providing deep technical expertise and driving architectural direction.
- Strategic Influence: Participate in shaping and guiding technical strategy and long-term roadmaps, balancing immediate business needs with enduring engineering quality.
- Collaboration and Mentorship: Partner with cross-functional teams—including Product, Design, and Data Analytics—to build innovative solutions. Mentor engineers, conduct code reviews, and provide technical guidance across teams.
- Quality and Velocity: Apply design principles based on careful analysis to create testable, maintainable features that improve engineering velocity and support continuous delivery.
- Operational Excellence: Lead release processes, on-call rotations, and site reliability initiatives for an “always-on” global commerce platform.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify productivity bottlenecks, propose system improvements, and advocate for guidelines in design and development.
- Engineering Roadmap: Anticipate future changes and design with flexibility in mind to support evolving business and technical needs.
Qualifications
Technical Skills:
- Proven experience designing and delivering complex, distributed, and high-availability systems at scale.
- Strong proficiency in multiple programming languages and frameworks, with deep expertise in at least one or two (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Scala, Python, or Node.js).
- Experience influencing and accomplishing technical strategy and architecture roadmaps, with a balance of short-term impact and long-term innovation.
- Familiarity with Shift Left approaches and modern DevOps practices.
- Experience leading cross-functional engineering initiatives and delivering large-scale software solutions end-to-end.
Experience
- 8+ years of professional experience in software development, with a track record of technical excellence and cross-team impact.
- Demonstrated success leading the delivery of large, complex systems in fast-paced environments.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience in a practical setting.

- Strong sense of ownership and accountability, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate across multiple divisions and collaborators.
