Summary
The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy’s six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for the execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization.
The Catawba (CNS) Nuclear Station Corporate Design Electrical Engineering team is responsible for the development, design, and implementation of engineering changes (ECs) at the CNS site. The individual in this role develops the scope, technical basis, installation, and testing requirements for site installed engineering changes and collaborates with other Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) staff to deliver high‑quality design solutions that meet site needs and milestone commitments.
Responsibilities
- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
- Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
- Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
- Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to manage assignments of increasing complexity.
- Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

- Engineering Changes (EC) would include AC power systems, DC power systems, Large AC motors, Transformers, Switchgear, Motor Control Centers, Voltage Regulators, Breakers, etc.
Basic / Required Qualifications Nuc Engineer III
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
- 4-6 years of engineering experience.
Sr Nuc Engineer
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
- Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, OR 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer. Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
- Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations based on solid engineering judgement.
- Experience in the following electrical power areas: Low, Medium, and/or High Voltage systems and components
- Experience in electrical protective relaying and associated components
- Proficient in principles of project management.
- Experience in the utility industry
- Working level knowledge of nuclear industry
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
Specific Requirements
- Ability to achieve Unescorted Access/Security clearance
- This position will have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
- Typical Office environment with flexibility to support plant operations. Must be able to work in an industrial environment safely.
- Hybrid Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period (2 days remote and 2 days on site during a 4 – 10 hr day work week). However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to CNS as required for ERO responsibilities.
- Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires.
- Occasional overnight travel.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.

- Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
