The Managing Director of Logistics and Distribution is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of Duke Energy’s material distribution centers, transportation logistics, and enterprise-wide material flow. This leader ensures that materials move seamlessly from manufacturers or distribution centers to operations centers, power plants, substations, and all field locations that support work execution across business units.

The role oversees day‑to‑day distribution operations; specialty heavy‑haul logistics for nuclear, renewables, transmission, and distribution; and all certification, safety, and compliance requirements for personnel operating commercial vehicles, cranes, forklifts, and other heavy equipment.

This position leads a workforce of more than 100 employees—including storekeepers, drivers, supervisors, managers, and directors—while working closely with labor unions across multiple states on negotiations, grievances, and corrective action processes.

The Managing Director partners with third‑party logistics providers, material handling companies, brokers, and staff augmentation firms, jointly developing commercial terms and scopes of work with Sourcing. This role is accountable for optimizing Duke Energy’s $3–4B in annual material flow and managing a departmental budget of $40M+ and total spend exceeding $70M.

Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Operational Excellence

  • Set the strategic direction, performance targets, and cultural expectations for all logistics and distribution operations.

  • Drive a high‑performance, inclusive, and innovative culture that balances deep regional expertise with enterprise‑wide process standardization.

  • Lead transformation initiatives that enhance productivity, reliability, traceability, and responsiveness across the materials management value chain.

Logistics, Distribution & Material Management

  • Ensure timely, accurate, and efficient movement of materials across all business units, including Power Grid Operations, Regulated Renewables, and enterprise support groups.

  • Oversee inbound/outbound logistics, material receipts, storage, transfers, issues, returns, disposition, cycle counts, and specialty brokered deliveries.

  • Maintain compliance with all rules governing hazardous materials, oversized loads, nuclear shipments, environmental requirements, and DOT regulations.

Safety, Compliance & Governance

  • Champion safety standards for all warehouse and field logistics personnel, including those operating trucks, forklifts, cranes, and rigging equipment.

  • Ensure full adherence to corporate EH&S requirements, Operational Excellence Program standards, Corrective Action Review Board expectations, and state-specific regulatory mandates.

Union & Workforce Management

  • Build strong, constructive relationships with union leadership.

  • Lead or support contract negotiations, grievance resolution, corrective actions, and workforce planning across multiple states.

  • Develop leaders and teams to ensure capability, engagement, and long‑term organizational strength.

Vendor Strategy & Contract Oversight

  • Develop and sustain strategic partnerships with third‑party vendors supporting warehousing, trucking, pole handling, and material logistics.

  • Oversee commercial negotiations and contract execution in collaboration with Sourcing.

Technology, Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Accelerate adoption of modern technologies, systems, training, and AI‑enabled tools to increase operational speed, quality, scalability, and resilience.

  • Benchmark Duke Energy’s logistics operations against industry peers; drive best‑practice integration and continuous improvement.

  • Lead cross‑functional transformation initiatives impacting sourcing, procurement, field operations, and work management.

Emergency & Storm Response

  • Support storm recovery, unplanned outages, and expedited material deliveries, ensuring strong alignment with IMT, ICS, and Incident Command Center requirements.

  • Maintain advanced knowledge of storm logistics and emergency response procedures.

Financial & Inventory Management

  • Manage a departmental budget of $40M+ and influence total annual spend above $70M.

  • Optimize inventory levels to maximize service availability while minimizing costs to customers and shareholders.

  • Design and track key performance indicators and operational metrics to measure effectiveness and drive accountability.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business Management, Accounting, Engineering, Economics, Project Management, Logistics, Finance, Data Analytics, or a related field.

  • Six Sigma, project management, lean process design certification, or equivalent experience.

  • 15+ years of Supply Chain experience across sourcing, planning, operations, inventory management, and technology.
