Job Description:
Asia Business Correspondent (Tokyo Bureau)
The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced reporter in Tokyo to cover business, finance and markets across Asia,
Asia is central to the most important business and financial developments of our time, such as China’s growing dominance in advanced manufacturing, the rewiring of global supply chains, worsening demographics and the deepening geopolitical and economic rivalry between Washington and Beijing.
Japan offers a unique perch from which to chronicle these shifts. Major Japanese companies such as Toyota and Sony are at the forefront of their industries. Soft Bank is playing a central role bankrolling the AI-driven world of tomorrow. Fortunes have been made, lost, and made again in some of the world’s deepest and most liquid capital markets. A vibrant culture, and an economy grappling with aging and other challenges, offer fertile ground for a reporter eager to range across different areas of coverage.
The successful candidate will think innovatively and ambitiously about how to capture the most riveting stories on Asia’s corporate landscape for the Journal’s business-minded audience. We’re looking for a reporter who can join the dots between people, places and trends to produce revelatory reporting at the intersection of business, finance, economics and geopolitics.
You will get the chance to work in a truly global newsroom, collaborating across regions, borders and time zones to produce rich features, arresting visual projects and must-read profiles and report to the Tokyo bureau chief.
You will:
-
Break news on your beat.
-
Conceptualize and deliver deeply reported enterprise stories as well as profiles of the people driving change in Japan.
-
Collaborate with colleagues in audio, video and visuals to craft a compelling body of work.
You have:
-
Experience covering corporate news, getting scoops and writing ambitious stories.
-
Outstanding writing ability and a knack for explaining developments in Asia clearly to audiences who may be far away.
-
Japanese language proficiency is a considerable advantage but not essential
-
Ability to think big and across coverage boundaries.
To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter detailing how you would approach this job, and five examples of your best work.
Application deadline is Jan 13th 2026
