Job Description:
Deputy Editor, Europe Business Finance & Economics (London)
The Wall Street Journal seeks an energetic editor to help steer our coverage of business and finance from our European hub in London.
You will work closely with reporters to develop scoops, drive news and dig deep into the world of money. Our remit is wide, and includes rough-and-tumble financial markets, trade wars, billionaire boardroom dramas, dodgy money flows, the AI economy, energy politics, the rarified air of the European luxury scene and much more. It is a moment of deep existential uncertainty for Europe and its economy, and this role requires expansive thinking about how to tell that story.
We are looking for someone who has demonstrated editing skills and experience in covering finance, business and economics. You will consult daily with your colleagues on the direction of coverage. While editing is the main part of this job, we welcome those who want to report and write as well.
The ideal candidate is a multi-tasker and a storyteller. You should be able to handle several articles at a time and also be a deft navigator of publishing technology. We want someone who pushes boundaries in how we present our journalism and thinks up new channels and conduits for reaching readers. You should be someone who leans into using AI to turbocharge our reporting.
The job reports to Alex Frangos, Europe Business Finance & Economics Editor.
You will:
-
Work closely with reporters to develop story ideas and execute them.
-
Handle breaking news quickly as well as work on longer, enterprise articles.
-
Explain to readers in plain English what’s happening in the world of business and why it matters.
-
Maintain relationships with high level sources in the world of business, economics finance and politics, to inform our coverage.
-
Collaborate closely with colleagues in photo, video and audio to create engaging, distinctive financial journalism.
-
Use the Journal’s AI tools to help us move faster and deeper on stories.
-
Use a reader centric approach, informed by the Journal’s sophisticated audience data to inform how we deliver the news.
You have:
-
At least five to 10 years experience as a financial journalist with a major news organization.
-
An impressive run of coverage that you have led or penned as a reporter.
-
A love for covering the world through the lens of business, finance and economics.
-
A base level understanding of financial markets, business and macroeconomics.
-
Amazing communication skills to keep your colleagues informed and on board.
-
A collaborative spirit, positive attitude and a management style that gets the best out of your colleagues.
To apply, please submit a resume, cover letter explaining how you would approach the job by April 10th. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage early submission as the position may be filled before the deadline.
