About the role

Diageo’s Global Tax model aligns core roles in direct tax, indirect tax, and tax business partnering.

Global Tax includes subject matter experts, business partners, and reporting and compliance teams. Global Tax has developed Tax Reporting and Compliance Centres of Excellence in Budapest, Bogota, Bangalore, and Manila. These centres support reporting, as well as technology and governance.

The North American Tax team is comprised of US tax and Canadian tax experts who oversee all areas of US & Canada (“NAM”) federal, state, and international income taxes, as well as key indirect taxes,

The purpose of this role is to ensure that the markets’ indirect tax processes are carried out accurately, efficiently (utilising automation), and on time, in full compliance with internal control procedures and legislative requirements.

The role is key in supporting the tax team in providing tax technical advice, and support to the Business Units and Global Functions on tax queries and projects.

Role Responsibilities

  • Managing routine tax and other tax related enquiries and tax projects for the market in cooperation with tax manager. Acting as back -up for the tax manager upon request.

  • Identifying and driving continuous process improvement in cooperation with the tax manager through establishing a LEAN approach to drive effectiveness and efficiency - supporting process improvements and rollout of standardised processes and automation re in scope markets.

  • Supporting the new controls and KPI report implementation (Tax calendar review), monitoring the implemented KPI-s, supporting investigation of the root-cause or errors and working with end-to-end processes to improve KPIs.

  • Providing training and any other kinds of technical support to the Tax teams and to other departments.

  • Regularly informing the Team Leader on daily issues. Responsible for flagging risks and tax saving opportunities

  • Reviewing balance sheet reconciliations and ensuring these are done on time and in an internal and external control compliant way..

  • Actively managing and coordinating tax related document retention for your markets.

What you'll bring

  • Practical experience of tax procedures including governance, controls, compliance and related accounting and documentation.

  • In depth knowledge of tax legislation

  • Knowledge of SAP

  • Working knowledge of indirect taxes, particularly excise and customs duties

  • Ability to work through others or exercise influence to deliver performance improvement.

  • Good English language and communication skills

  • Generates and sustains great working relationships and networks across the organisation.

  • Strong stakeholder management skills

  • Flexibility for adapting to change, often at short notice, with positive attitude.

  • Strong risk management skills, ability to follow-up/flag potential issues

  • Commercially astute, analytically strong strategic problem solver with the ability to constructively challenge business units in relation to solid compliance.

  • Courage to maintain focus and integrity in tough situations.

  • Proactive and a self-starter comfortable operating independently
