Senior Researcher – Electrical Systems

Location: Cork, Ireland

Power the next generation of flight

What’s the next leap in aerospace? Hybrid and electric propulsion. Smarter, lighter, safer electrical systems. Aviation that is cleaner by design, not compromise.

At Collins Aerospace, that future is already under construction.

We’re looking for a Senior Researcher in Electrical Systems to help drive breakthrough technologies for next-generation aircraft. You’ll join an international, highly collaborative research team passionate about power electronics and electrified aviation — and you’ll work at the point where theory becomes hardware, and ideas become flight-ready technology.

This role sits within Applied Research & Technology, where curiosity, rigour, and hands-on experimentation come together to influence real aircraft programs worldwide.

What you’ll be working on

You’ll provide technical leadership and deliver impactful research across advanced electrical systems, with deep expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • High-power-density power electronics: converter design, analysis, and control
  • Electrical power distribution architectures, including redundancy, fault isolation, and system safety
  • EMI analysis and filter design, including optimal magnetic component design
  • Control of converters and motor-drive systems, implemented on DSPs and/or FPGAs
  • High-voltage effects and mitigations: arcing faults, creepage and clearance, partial discharge, lightning, and low-pressure/altitude considerations

Experience with aerospace systems, architectures, or certification standards is highly valued, though not essential.

What you’ll do

As part of a multidisciplinary research team, you will:

  • Develop and execute technology research plans within agreed time and budget constraints

  • Apply technical excellence and creative thinking to generate innovative concepts

  • Design, build, and test hardware prototypes and control strategies in lab environments

  • Translate complex ideas into clear reports and presentations for senior stakeholders

  • Contribute directly to long-term technology roadmaps

  • Own significant components of research projects or lead complex subsystems

  • Support proposals for externally funded research initiatives

  • Collaborate with universities, government bodies, national laboratories, and industry partners

  • What you’ll bring

  • A PhD in Electronics Engineering with 0–2+ years of academic or industrial experience orA Master’s degree with 2–5+ years of relevant experience

  • A strong experimental mindset and enthusiasm for hands-on research

  • The ability to work autonomously while thriving in international teams

  • Excellent communication skills, with confidence presenting technical work to diverse audiences

  • A willingness to challenge assumptions, champion new ideas, and expand beyond your core expertise

What We Offer

**•**Competitive salaries.

  • 23 days holiday + statutory public holidays

  • Contributory Pension Scheme (up to 8% company contribution)

  • ‘Life Assurance’ with pension.

  • Enhanced family friendly policies including enhanced maternity, paternity & shared parental leave.

  • Private Medical Insurance
