As a Psychiatric Crisis Specialists, you are an integral member of the Behavioral Health Intake team. You are responsible for assessing and identifying the unique needs of all Behavioral Health patients within the Cleveland Clinic System Emergency Departments and Hospitals. In this role, you will work to ensure they receive the necessary support and resources to achieve treatment goals and find healing. Your daily efforts can make a significant and lasting difference on all those you meet, including patients, their loved ones and the entire community.

A caregiver in this position works PRN (as needed) from6: 45am—7:15pm

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Complete comprehensive mental status, psychosocial, risk and chemical use assessments.

  • Identify patient crisis needs and participate in on-going assessment and care plan recommendations for patients with extended time awaiting dispositions.

  • Provide crisis intervention services using a therapeutic intervention based on patient centered outcomes and standards of care based on current research and evidence-based practice.

  • Participate in the clinical instruction and supervision of Psychiatric Crisis Intervention Specialists seeking independent licensure and student interns shadowing or participating in the department to provide learning experiences.

  • Act with integrity in placing professional charge capture for crisis intervention services provided and document all requirements for such services provided.

  • Supply information to the medical team for consideration of a differential diagnosis.

  • Recognize significant changes in patient condition and respond appropriately.

  • Navigate insurance verification and pre-certification processes for behavioral health carve-outs.

  • Provide psychoeducation to family, significant others of patients and other co-working caregivers about Behavioral Health, de-escalation and/or other related topics.

  • Involve the patient/family (or designee) and other current providers in developing a plan of care individualized to patient cultural, religious and educational needs.

  • Develop appropriate patient goals for identified problems.

  • Serves as a patient advocate.

  • Process referred cases to appropriate disposition, including inpatient placement or assistance with community wrap around services, for a successful discharge plan.

  • Communicate information regarding patient plan of care, current outcomes and acuity at end of shift report.

  • Perform routine administrative office functions as needed to facilitate casework processes.

  • Assist in orientation of new Behavioral Health Intake team staff or other hospital personnel.

  • Complete all documentation and records related to patient care.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Master’s of Art (MA) or Master’s of Science (MS) in a healthcare profession or MEd

  • Current licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) with no history of substantiated ethics or patient abuse reports

  • Two years of experience post degree

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Secondary language fluency

  • Awareness of or experience working with patients who have been diagnosed with a substance use disorder

  • Behavioral health and emergency department/crisis experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires Corrected hearing and vision to normal range

  • Some positions may be more sedentary work

  • Some positions may be more light work

  • Require full range of motion, eye-hand coordination

  • Require standing or walking for extensive periods of time

  • Require some exposure to communicable disease or bodily fluids

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
