Sometimes, an Emergency Department visit is not long enough for caregivers to understand a condition or provide the appropriate recovery time. The Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) cares for patients awaiting results to determine if discharge or readmittance is necessary. As a Patient Care Nurse Assistant (PCNA) on this team, you will coordinate with fellow caregivers to create a welcoming, healing and warm environment for patients. This position offers the ability to pursue educational advancement, higher positions and skills development courses offered by Cleveland Clinic. In this role, you have an excellent opportunity to start your nursing career and work in a supportive and caring healthcare setting.
A caregiver in this role works nights from 7: 00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. with weekend requirements.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
-
Assist nursing caregivers, promote patient comfort and carry out nursing orders.
-
Transport patients by wheelchair, bed or stretcher from the department/unit.
-
Conduct EKG and phlebotomy duties.
-
Attend to patient and family needs and problems.
-
Assist patients with activities of daily living, such as dressing, bathing, toileting and hygiene.
-
Report pertinent information regarding patient condition to appropriate nursing staff.
-
Assist patients with tray set up and feeding.
-
Restock supplies daily and order supplies from Central Supply.
-
Document care provided in the medical record.
-
Collect and transport specimens.
-
Provide RNs/LPNs with accurate and timely intake/output data, vital signs, blood glucose results and other data, note changes from prior measurement and communicate accordingly.

Respond to call lights within five minutes or communicate inability to do so.
-
Report patient needs to an RN/LPN immediately.
-
Assist in the removal of equipment (I.e. IV pumps, commodes, PAS) in preparation for room cleaning.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

High School Diploma or GED
-
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon or within new hire period

Nursing students:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross prior to hire
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
-
Graduate of an approved program for nursing assistants or previous hospital training
-
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
-
Six months of experience in an acute care hospital setting
-
Prior patient-care experience
-
Customer service experience
-
STNA certification
Physical Requirements:
-
The position requires a considerate amount of physical work not to exceed 50 pounds.
-
Any workload exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance.
-
The individual will be required to pull up or reposition patients in bed, lift supplies, place equipment or supports, and push beds throughout the hospital.
-
The individual must be able to bend over to perform certain duties such as check chest tube drainage, check urine output, etc.
-
The individual must be able to quickly maneuver throughout halls, stairways and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies.
-
Interpretation of environmental input requires visual and auditory skills.
-
In the event there is a need to evacuate the building, heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety.
-
Mental Demands: Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with department director, physicians and other members of the Healthcare team; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self control and tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers.

Special Demands: Essential Sensory requirement - ability to visually assess patients and implement plan of care.

Essential Technical/Motor Skill - finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination are necessary when charting, using equipment, and providing direct patient care.

- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
