Cleveland Clinic’s Cardiothoracic Surgery Department offers virtually every type of cardiac surgery. Their depth and breadth of experience allows them to perform complex operations while using the newest surgical techniques, equipment and devices. Surgical Technicians, sometimes called “scrub techs”, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses and ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintaining a sterile field. Surgical Technicians perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, prepare sterile dressing and clean instruments for terminal sterilization.

This position is part of Cleveland Clinic’s Weekender Flex Program and will require you to work two 12-hour shifts per weekend and one 12-hour shift during the week. While you are only working 36 hours a week, Cleveland Clinic will pay you for 44 hours of work and give you full-time status and benefits. This schedule allows caregivers to enjoy personal time during the week with family and friends and take care of any errands that will not interfere with a typical day shift schedule.

A caregiver in this position works days| Orientation is 3 months| Mon-Fri| 6: 00am—2:30pm before moving to the weekend schedule.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

• Perform scrub functions.

• Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available.

• Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery.

• Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients.

• Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure.

• Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.”

• Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and gives specimens to circulator for disposition.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, accredited through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)

• OR completion of military surgical technology program will meet the educational requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or Red Cross

Physical Requirements:

• Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

• Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.

• Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds and ability to push, pull, and navigate supply carts weighing > than 75 pounds periodically.

• Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

• Requires working under stressful conditions of working irregular hours.

• Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

• Medium Work

• Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

• Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work

Personal Protective Equipment:

• Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
