The Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) offers advanced outpatient surgery, allowing patients to return home soon after their procedure without the need for overnight stays. Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs”, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and Registered Nurses. They help to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintain a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, preparing sterile dressing and cleaning instruments for terminal sterilization. This is a great hands-on learning opportunity that will allow you to enhance your skills each and every day.

This is a regular PRN position, with caregivers working days between 7: 00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. with extended hours on the weekend.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).

  • Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available.

  • Assist RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery.

  • Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients.

  • Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure.

  • Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.”

  • Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and gives specimens to circulator for disposition.

  • Coordinate surgical and clinical schedules.

  • Assist with outpatient clinic flow.

  • Provide information to patients and family.

  • Assist with coordinating outpatient procedure room cases and supplies.

  • Assist with orientation of new hires.

  • Work on unit committees.

  • Assist with marketing and practice development.

  • Coordinate studies for sections.

  • Answer patient phone calls, gather information and relay to provider.

  • Perform post-op phone calls and relay information to provider.

  • Provide information back to patient based on provider instruction.

  • Scribe for provider in outpatient clinic.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology program accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) OR completion of a military surgical technology program **OR **certification as a Surgical Technologist (acceptable certifications for this route are TS-C through the National Center for Competency Training or CST through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Certified Surgical Technologist

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.

  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds and ability to push, pull, and navigate supply carts weighing > than 75 pounds periodically.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Requires working under stressful conditions of working irregular hours.

  • Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

  • Medium Work

  • Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work
