The Department

Developer Enablement is a function of the CTO organisation. Our mission is to make it easy and enjoyable for software engineering teams to go from a business idea to delivering an innovative product solution. The main goals are to improve and upgrade our tools, streamline our processes, automate and strengthen our controls, and help development teams adopt modern working methods.

The Role

We're seeking a senior technology leader to own and drive the GenAI engineering capability within Developer Enablement. As Director, GenAI Engineering, you will provide strategic and operational leadership, setting direction across multiple teams, shaping the GenAI roadmap, and embedding cutting‑edge GenAI practices into the enterprise software delivery landscape. You will balance strategic oversight with informed technical depth, ensuring teams are empowered to deliver scalable, secure, and compliant GenAI solutions aligned to our mission.

You’ll be accountable for organisational outcomes rather than individual delivery, translating GenAI research into enterprise‑scale, production‑grade platforms and capabilities, and ensuring effective transition from experimentation to regulated deployment across the organisation.

You will own and shape the engineering strategy and roadmap, contributing to overall product vision while balancing innovation, risk, regulatory expectations, and cost efficiency. You will partner closely with Product, Architecture, Risk, and Security to deliver sustainable GenAI capabilities at scale.

Our technology estate includes Python, Go, TypeScript, React, Open Shift, Mongo, and a rapidly evolving GenAI ecosystem. As a Director, you will guide strategic technology choices, platform evolution, and standards, including focusing on hands‑on implementation.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the engineering capabilities, managing and developing multiple teams with full accountability for hiring, performance management, progression, and organisational design

  • Define the engineering operating models, including team structure, engagement patterns, and scalable delivery frameworks

  • Prepare and present regular updates on delivery, risk, and investment to senior technology and business leadership

  • Oversee GenAI application and platform development, ensuring consistent patterns across prompt engineering, RAG, agentic workflows, and integration layers

  • Provide architectural governance and oversight for end‑to‑end LLM solutions, ensuring quality, resilience, and scalability

  • Own GenAI evaluation, risk, and control frameworks, covering performance, safety, bias, monitoring, and auditability

  • Act as a senior owner for GenAI governance, ensuring adherence to firm policies, regulatory requirements, and control standards

  • Ensure change is managed with appropriate documentation, approvals, and readiness standards, including permit‑to‑operate and disaster recovery where applicable

  • Drive organisation‑wide adoption of GenAI standards, platforms, and best practices, partnering with Product, Risk, Security, Legal, and Data teams

  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders on GenAI opportunities, risks, and trade‑offs

Characteristics:

  • Able to identify and solve problems effectively

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

  • A self-starter with the ability to work effectively in teams and remotely

  • Pragmatic, with a director‑level approach to risk management, balancing innovation with safeguarding the firm, its clients, and its reputation

  • An advocate of inclusion and diversity in every way

  • A growth mindset and willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment

  • Shows enthusiasm and develops trust through empathy

Experience:

  • Proven experience leading large‑scale engineering organisations at Director or equivalent senior leadership level, with accountability for strategy, delivery, and governance

  • Strong expertise in multiple programming languages (preferably Python, Go, and TypeScript), frameworks, and tools

  • Extensive experience deploying GenAI and LLM systems in regulated, enterprise environments, including evaluation, guard‑railing, monitoring, and compliance

  • Proven experience with distributed systems, event-driven architectures, container-based micro-services, distributed logs, SQL and NoSQL databases, and Dev Sec Ops

  • Experience working in a product focused team as opposed to a project focused team is beneficial
