Position Summary:

A DDC (Direct Digital Control) Controls Technician is responsible for installing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintaining digital control systems, PLC systems used in HVAC, building automation, and industrial environments. This role supports systems that integrate with protocols such as BACnet, LON, and Modbus, and platforms including Tridium/Niagara, Honeywell, Delta, Siemens, or Johnson Controls Metasys. The technician ensures that control systems operate efficiently, reliably, and in accordance with design specifications and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Installation & Commissioning:

  • Install, configure, and program DDC systems, PLC systems for HVAC and building automation equipment (e.g., air handlers, chillers, boilers, pumps, VFDs).
  • Perform system startup, sensor verification, point‑to‑point testing, and integration with networked control systems.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance:

  • Diagnose and repair control system issues, including hardware failures, communication faults, and sensor calibration errors.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and performance testing to ensure optimal system operation.

Programming & Configuration:

  • Modify or develop system programs, logic sequences, and control strategies.
  • Configure network devices and communication paths for reliable operation across BACnet, LON, Modbus, or IP‑based networks.

Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records, including wiring diagrams, control schematics, programming revisions, test reports, and commissioning documentation.
  • Update as‑built drawings and system documentation after modifications.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with engineers, project managers, contractors, and facility operations teams to execute projects and resolve system issues.
  • Provide technical support during design reviews, site walkthroughs, and system commissioning.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Follow OSHA and company safety standards at all times.
  • Maintain a professional appearance, communicate clearly with stakeholders, and adhere to site‑specific requirements, including secure facility protocols when applicable.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Technical Background

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, HVAC technology, or equivalent field;
    or equivalent hands‑on experience in controls, HVAC, or automation, PLC.

Control Systems Knowledge:

  • Strong understanding of DDC hardware, PLC, HVAC fundamentals, hydronics, refrigeration, and building automation principles.
  • Knowledge of control sequences, PID loops, sensor types, and field devices.

Software & Tools:

  • Proficiency with DDC, PLC control programming interfaces, graphics programming and workstation software.
  • Experienced with Microsoft Office, handheld diagnostic tools, and PC‑based configuration utilities.

Networking Skills:

  • Familiarity with BACnet (IP & MS/TP), LON, Modbus, and general IP networking concepts.
  • Understanding of addressing, routing, and device communication methods.
  • Understanding of PLC logic.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • OSHA safety training
  • HVAC certifications (EPA 608, NATE, etc.)
  • PLC or building automation manufacturer certifications
  • Tridium/Niagara credentials highly beneficial

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities
  • Attention to detail and documentation accuracy
  • Effective communication and teamwork
  • Ability to work independently in fast‑paced, field‑based environments

Typical Work Environment:

  • Field‑based work in commercial buildings, industrial facilities, data centers, schools, or government sites.
  • May require travel between job locations, extended hours, or on‑call availability.
  • Must be able to meet background check requirements for secure or government‑related projects.

A DDC Controls Technician combines electrical, mechanical, and software expertise to keep building automation and industrial control systems operating efficiently, safely, and in alignment with engineered design. This role is key to ensuring facility reliability, energy performance, and occupant comfort.
