We’re looking for an experienced and collaborative legal leader to join our growing Payments Network Legal team. In this role, you will provide legal counsel and support to the business partners and second line of defense teams managing counterparty credit risk, network participant oversight, fraud, and chargebacks and disputes.

About the Role:

The attorney will be responsible for collaborating with various stakeholders on Global Payment Network marketing content and intent, reviewing network marketing and servicing collateral and network participant communications, and working with business leaders to identify risks and problem-solve complex issues. The ideal candidate should have expertise in marketing and advertising laws and risk management. This position will have responsibility for:

• Identifying and assessing legal risks associated with network marketing and network participant communications

• Active engagement and legal support as part of a collaborative and cross-functional team

• Collaborating with Global Payment Network business teams, Brand, the Business Risk Office, Corporate Communications, and Compliance stakeholders to address risks, develop creative solutions, and resolve issues

• Regular interactions with senior business partners, Legal Department subject matter experts, and other business attorneys

• Enhance existing processes and legal engagement models to facilitate marketing and communication reviews and manage risk

Basic Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school

• Active member in good standing of at least one state bar

• At least 8 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm environment, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate, or as in-house counsel

Preferred Qualifications:

• 10+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm environment, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate, or as in-house counsel

• 5+ years experience providing legal advice to marketing and brand teams

• 3+ years experience in the payments industry

• Experience with international marketing laws and regulations

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

Mc Lean, VA: $230,400 - $263,000 for Director, Asst General Counsel

New York, NY: $251,400 - $286,900 for Director, Asst General Counsel

Richmond, VA: $209,500 - $239,100 for Director, Asst General Counsel

Riverwoods, IL: $209,500 - $239,100 for Director, Asst General Counsel

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
