About the role

About the Team:

The Global System Service team owns the infrastructure services and management solutions that power Byte Dance's data centers outside of China — from day-to-day operations to long-term architecture design and maintenance. The team specializes in composing end-to-end solutions by drawing on both open-source community tools and in-house developed products, tailored to both the business requirements and the operational complexities of large-scale infrastructure across Byte Dance's non-China regions. Our mission is to deliver efficient infrastructure solutions and a stable, secure system environment for Byte Dance's global business.

Responsibilities:

We are looking for a self-motivated traffic solution engineer and DevOps expert. As a traffic solution engineer and DevOps expert, your responsibilities will include:

  • Design, configure and maintain flexible proxy service deployments that accommodate diverse and evolving forwarding patterns, including complex routing rules, protocol handling, and access control requirements.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to understand traffic forwarding requirements and translate them into practical, deployable proxy service solutions using a combination of cloud products and in-house platforms.
  • Rapidly prototype and iterate on traffic solutions to validate approaches and accelerate delivery, prioritizing deployment efficiency and time-to-value over large-scale infrastructure design.
  • Build and maintain observability pipelines covering log collection, metrics aggregation, and usage analysis to provide business stakeholders with actionable insights into traffic behavior.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for online incidents and business inquiries related to traffic services; triage issues, coordinate resolution, and communicate status clearly to stakeholders.
  • Document solution patterns and reusable configurations to build a knowledge base that accelerates future delivery and onboarding.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related majors.
  • Strong understanding of OSI Layer 4–7 protocols, including TCP/UDP, HTTP/1.1 & HTTP/2, TLS, DNS, and WebSocket.
  • Solid knowledge of forward and reverse proxy mechanisms; hands-on experience with tools such as Nginx, Envoy, HAProxy, or equivalent.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across the network and application stack, with the ability to diagnose issues spanning DNS resolution, load balancing, TLS handshake, and application-layer failures.
  • Strong communication skills — able to clearly articulate technical concepts and solutions to both engineering teams and non-technical stakeholders; effective in cross-functional and cross-regional collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with cloud products (e.g., AWS EKS/NLB, GCP Cloud Load Balancing) and the ability to compose them into coherent traffic service deployment architectures.
  • Development proficiency in Python, Go, or equivalent; experience building internal tooling or automation for traffic management.
  • Experience designing or maintaining data pipeline and observability infrastructure (e.g., metrics collection, log aggregation, traffic telemetry).
  • Data analysis skills — ability to process and interpret large volumes of traffic data to identify trends, anomalies, and optimization opportunities.
  • Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
