Fuels & Low Carbon Technology (F&LCT) is a global organization of more than 300 technologists, scientists, and engineers who develop groundbreaking solutions across bp’s Fuels, Refining, Bioenergy, and Hydrogen businesses. The organization also supports bp’s wider Technology function through innovation management, modelling, digital science, and academic research partnerships—providing the scientific and engineering foundation that enables bp’s low carbon and operational ambitions.
Within F&LCT, the Bioenergy & Hydrogen Technology (B&HT) team focuses on crafting and scaling technologies that unlock bp’s low carbon growth. The team advances pathways across bioenergy, biogas, SAF, hydrogen, and novel feedstocks, while working closely with bp businesses to ensure solutions meet real operational and commercial needs. B&HT plays a central role in defining bp’s technology direction for today’s energy needs as well as the energy transition by driving innovation from early-stage concepts through deployment ready solutions.
Job Purpose and primary objectives:
We are delighted to present this excellent opportunity for a Catalyst Characterization Lead to join our global team of scientists who provide data and insight reaching across bp – from research and innovation into low carbon technologies, to critical business support for our global value chain.
The Analytical Chemistry team is expected to work across multiple interfaces to ensure business needs are met. The team develops and runs new analytical methods and equipment to support bp’s strategic framework across fuels (including biofuels), SAF, biogas, feedstocks, hydrogen, oil and gas, and cross‑cutting low‑carbon initiatives.
This role reports to the Analytical Chemistry Manager.
Key responsibilities include:
- Deliver safe, standards‑adherent experimental operations, contributing to the development of a proactive safety culture.
- Apply analytical science expertise to perform analytical testing and method development, addressing complex challenges across diverse business areas.
- Own and advance key analytical techniques for the team, providing deep theoretical and practical expertise and mentoring colleagues.
- Drive continuous improvement in analytical methods and sample analysis.
- Partner with management to develop and implement the analytical strategy for the team, aligned with the global analytical function.
Essential Criteria & Qualifications:
- Bachelor's/Master's degree in Chemistry or related analytical science field, or proven experience in analytical techniques.
- Experience of analytical science in materials, catalysts or corrosion.
- Resourceful experimentalist with practical research experience in laboratory scale reaction testing equipment, for example XRD, BET, UV/IR, TPR, microscopy, elemental analysis, etc.
- Knowledge/experience of key catalyst characterization techniques and ability to interpret and apply results, e.g. by XRD, Microscopy, Spectroscopy, etc.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, with the ability to collaborate effectively, contribute to team success, foster learning, share ideas, and build both personal expertise and team capability.
- Proven ability to lead their own projects and deliver results.
Desirable Experience:
- Broad knowledge and experience of analytical techniques in solid, liquid or gas phase mixtures.
- Experience in chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, or related fields.
- Deep experience in X-ray diffraction or microscopy would be desirable
