Role synopsis

The Research & Process Analytics Scientist is responsible for developing, deploying, and maintaining advanced analytical and predictive models to support crude evaluation, refinery intermediate characterization, and process performance monitoring across bp’s refineries.

This role combines analytical chemistry, chemometrics, and advanced data analytics to deliver actionable insights into feedstock quality, process behavior, fouling, corrosion, and other reliability- and value‑critical phenomena. The successful candidate will apply a variety of modeling techniques to laboratory measurements and process data, supporting both near‑term operational needs and longer‑term technology development.

The role is based within Fuels and Low Carbon Technlogy and partners closely with refinery laboratories, process engineers, digital teams, and external technology providers.

Key accountabilities

  • Develop and maintain chemometric and multivariate models using spectroscopic and analytical data.
  • Apply PCA, PLS/PLS‑DA, regression, classification, and machine learning techniques to model the properties of fuels and refinery intermediate streams.
  • Create predictive analytics for monitoring and diagnosing quality events, fouling, corrosion, and related process phenomena.
  • Integrate laboratory, spectroscopic, and process data into actionable analytical solutions.
  • Partner with refinery labs, process engineers, and digital teams to deploy and support models in operational environments.
  • Evaluate and apply third‑party analytical tools and data platforms.
  • Provide technical support following deployment, including model maintenance and performance monitoring.
  • Contribute to safety reviews and ensure HSSE‑aligned laboratory and analytical practices.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, physical science, or a closely related field (required).

MS or PhD preferred, with demonstrated focus on applied mathematics, statistics, or data science applied to chemical systems.

Essential experience and job requirements

4+ years of experience in analytical chemistry, chemometrics, process analytics, or related roles in industry or academia.

Hands‑on experience with analytical instruments and laboratory data workflows.

Experience applying classical and modern modeling techniques, including PCA, PLS, SVM, regression, classification, and machine learning approaches to support monitoring, diagnostics, and prediction.

An understanding of spectroscopic methods and quantitative analysis techniques including infrared, Raman, UV-vis, XRF, ICP, NMR, GC, and MS.

Working proficiency in MATLAB, Python, and/or R for data analysis and modeling.

Proven ability to solve interdisciplinary problems and communicate technical results effectively to diverse audiences.

Strong data management, documentation, and computational skills.

Desirable criteria & qualifications

Experience applying chemometrics or advanced analytics to refining, petrochemical, or process manufacturing systems.

Exposure to online or at‑line analytics, microanalysis, or product quality monitoring applications.

Experience with separation science and sample preparation techniques.

Track record of contributing to technology development, deployment, or scale‑up.

Ability to rapidly learn new processes, influence cross‑functional teams, and operate effectively in ambiguous or evolving problem spaces.
