Safety is our primary focus. The Lab HSSE & OPEX Manager provides leadership and assurance for safe operations, acting as the trusted conscience of the business on HSSE matters. The role is responsible for the effective communication, planning, coordination, execution, and monitoring of safety‑critical processes and procedures across the site. This includes oversight of Operating Management System (OMS) activities, risk management, Control of Work, Management of Change, laboratory safety, and support to the HSSE agenda.

The individual develops and promotes best‑practice HSSE standards and provides assurance, self‑verification, and risk management support across all technology departments, covering both operational and office environments. The role actively supports line‑led safety leadership and works closely with site leadership as a key member of the on‑site leadership team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver strategy through implementation and execution of global HSSE initiatives.

  • Provide leadership and governance of OMS framework, encompassing CoW, risk assessments, MoC, self-verification, audits, and compliance management.

  • Act as site owner for chemical risk management, safety‑critical equipment oversight, and maintenance of the site risk register, assuring barrier health through structured annual reviews using risk tools (e.g., NOVA).

  • Provide HSSE leadership for major CAPEX and construction projects, acting as Safety Lead and SPA, including approval of permits and CoW authorities for both project and BAU activities.

  • Lead environmental and sustainability initiatives to support reduction of the site’s carbon footprint.

  • Lead contractor engagement and management, manage safety walks and track actions.

  • Support facilities management with coordination of activities across site.

  • Own HSSE KPI reporting and self‑verification outputs for central HSSE teams and local stakeholders.

  • Act as on‑site incident response and investigation lead, including planning and delivery of emergency response exercises.

  • Lead business continuity and crisis preparedness, including BCP ownership, crisis and continuity training (including leadership teams), and coordination with site security.

  • Ensure delivery of safety‑related training and competence development aligned to site training matrices.

  • Develop, maintain, and govern HSSE procedures, work instructions, and risk assessments, ensuring effective controls, compliance, and traceability.

Planning & Strategy

  • Lead the planning and prioritization of HSSE initiatives based on priorities and risk assessments.

  • Provide expert advice on occupational and laboratory safety and oversee inspection programs, ensuring timely closure of actions.

  • Facilitate CAPEX planning and implementation, contractor engagement, while supporting HSSE planning cycles.

Implementation & Monitoring

  • Drive standardization of HSSE processes by guiding departments in developing and deploying consistent procedures and work instructions.

  • Support effective on‑the‑ground execution of procedural changes in accordance with MOC.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable legal, regulatory, and bp internal requirements, including laboratory equipment maintenance and fire protection guidelines.

  • Monitor HSSE performance and track actions arising from audits, initiatives, roadmaps, and governance forums.

  • Own reporting and analysis of key HSSE metrics, including security‑related equipment performance, integrity management updates, and risk assessment tools.

  • Enable knowledge sharing and exchange of HSSE best practices with extensive forums.

The Lab HSSE & OPEX Manager reports to the Senior HSSE Manager with a local reporting line to the Site Lead (Bengaluru). The role ensures compliance with HSSE standards and applicable local, state, and national legislation, while mentoring and supporting site personnel to strengthen safety leadership and ownership.

Required qualifications and experience include:

  • Bachelor’s degree related to HSE, engineering, operations, or a related field or equivalent qualifications with at least 10 years of experience.

  • Significant HSSE experience in oil & gas, chemical, or laboratory environments.

  • Experience working within large, complex, matrix organizations with material HSSE risk exposure.

  • Proven track record to partner with and advise senior leaders on HSSE matters.

  • Demonstrated capability to lead, mentor, and develop teams across geographies.

  • Strong knowledge of relevant HSSE legislation, standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Advanced experience in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
