Job Description:

Role Synopsis

The LNG Book within GPTI (Gas and Power Trading International) is responsible for optimising BP’s advantaged LNG portfolio, including equity and third‑party supply, long‑term regasification and liquefaction contracts in the US and Europe, a global customer base across premium markets, and a mix of BP‑operated and chartered vessels.

The LNG Book is a significant contributor to Trading & Shipping (T&S) and one of its four strategic growth pillars. It trades regional arbitrage opportunities via linear and non‑linear spreads across NBP, TTF, Henry Hub, JKM, and crude, integrating paper trading with the physical optimisation and risk management of the portfolio to enhance overall performance.

The Asset Optimisation team develops analytical tools and insights to support traders in maximising portfolio value. This role sits at the intersection of physical LNG operations, trading, and technology, translating complex contractual and market dynamics into actionable insights, tools, and recommendations.

Key Accountabilities

Reporting to the LNG Asset Optimisation Manager (Asia), the role will:

  • Build and maintain deep expertise in LNG contract pricing, structures, and embedded optionality. Design and maintain tools and dashboards that surface key contract features and identify optimisation opportunities across the portfolio.
  • Deliver robust commercial analysis covering deal economics, cargo pricing, and exposure impacts. Provide concise, decision‑ready commentary on assumptions, P&L and exposure outcomes, sensitivities, and key risks.
  • Design, enhance, and deliver analytical capabilities and proofs of concept within the Asset Optimisation toolset, primarily using Python and Excel, improving automation, scalability, and speed to insight.
  • Support front‑office operational processes by ensuring systems of record accurately reflect contractual positions, optimal P&L, and risk exposures. Coordinate system changes and communicate clearly to enable timely hedging and trading decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with trading, shipping, operations, risk, and technology teams to support day‑to‑day activities, integrate new business, and deliver system and process improvements.

Essential Experience and Requirements

  • 3–6 years’ experience in a front‑office analytics role within an energy trading environment
  • Strong understanding of LNG deal economics, key value drivers, and hedging implications
  • Proven ability to develop, maintain, and deploy production‑grade Python code
  • Highly organised, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment
  • Proactive, solutions‑oriented, and comfortable operating in ambiguous, unstructured problem spaces
  • Collaborative team player with clear ownership and accountability
  • Strong interest in applying technology to deliver commercial value in trading

Desirable Criteria

  • Practical knowledge of LNG trading products and market structures
  • Working knowledge of ETRM systems, including representation of contractual exposures and optionality
  • Solid grounding in option theory, valuation, and risk management
  • Advanced software development skills, including object‑oriented design and API development/consumption
  • Advanced Excel skills for analysis and automation, including VBA and Power Query
