Data is at the heart of Aladdin and increasingly the ability to acquire, store, analyse and gain insight from data has become a key component of our competitive advantage. The Aladdin Data (AD) team is responsible for the data ecosystem within Black Rock. Our goal is to build and maintain a leading-edge Enterprise Data Platform (EDP) that provides highly available, consistent data of the highest quality for all users of the platform, notably investors, operations teams and data scientists.

EDP supports four outcomes that, together, enable Black Rock’s data strategy:

Provide high quality, reliable data and services to power the core investment processes for Aladdin clients. Enable Aladdin clients to reduce operational overhead and improve client service by offering Aladdin data through a commercial data warehouse, Aladdin Data Cloud (ADC). Allow non-Aladdin Black Rock teams to focus on value generation, by providing a general-purpose data warehouse platform. Empower teams across Black Rock to produce data products to monetize their data and analytical models.

Members of the AD team get to experience working at one of the most recognized financial companies in the world while being part of a team responsible for designing and building the next generation Enterprise Data platform, designed to automate data acquisition, ingestion, transformation, and distribution to support Black Rock’s and our clients’ data needs. Our product managers and engineers design and build data systems to solve some of the most complex technical and business data challenges in the industry, and they partner with data and analytics experts to deliver high quality analytical and derived data to our consumers.

About this role

We are looking for a Technical Writer to help us continue the growth and adoption of EDP (Enterprise Data Platform) by strengthening our internal technical platform documentation. This documentation helps architects ensure that the platform continues to evolve as a cohesive whole, and helps engineers understand the impact that changes in one part of the platform will have on other parts.

In this role, you will work closely with engineering and product stakeholders to ensure that technical documentation remains accurate, consistent, and usable as the platform expands and changes.

This role involves creating and enhancing technical documentation as needed, with a strong emphasis on organizing, validating, refining, and maintaining existing content to ensure it remains accurate, relevant, and consistent over time.

While the primary focus is internal platform documentation, this role will also support the broader documentation needs of the platform (e.g., technical guides, API documentation, change communication, troubleshooting resources).

Responsibilities

• Organize, refine, and extend existing engineering and architecture documentation so it is clear, accessible, and usable for internal engineers and stakeholders.
• Partner with engineering, product, and other SMEs to stay current on upcoming changes, and ensure that technical documentation is updated as part of feature and infrastructure delivery.
• Capture, consolidate, and publish the technical decisions made in architectural reviews, design boards, and similar forums.
• Produce and maintain multi-layer architectural diagrams, platform overviews, engineering guides, internal API documentation, integration guidance, troubleshooting/FAQ content, and internal release/change notes.
• Document and explain integration points and component boundaries across platform components (interfaces, dependencies, data and event flows, APIs, configuration, and validation/operational steps as appropriate).
• Create and maintain onboarding-focused documentation that helps new engineers quickly understand the platform, key workflows, terminology, and where to find essential information.
• Gather and incorporate feedback from internal users (engineering, support, platform consumers) to continuously improve clarity, completeness, and usability.

Required experience and qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Communication, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly for internal technical audiences.
• Proven ability to partner with engineers, product managers, and SMEs to gather inputs, validate technical accuracy, and translate information into high-quality documentation.
• Working knowledge of data and related concepts (e.g., data warehousing, distributed systems, APIs, data pipelines, controls, analytics) and modern software delivery practices (e.g., Agile, CI/CD, change management), with the ability to understand how documentation fits into and supports the engineering lifecycle in a complex environment.
• Proficiency with technical drawing and documentation tools (e.g., Visio, Confluence, Word, PowerPoint, Miro or similar).
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple documentation workstreams while maintaining quality and consistency.

Our hybrid work model

Employees are currently required to work at least 4 days in the office per week, with the flexibility to work from home 1 day a week.
