Join our innovative team as a Lead Software Engineer in Boston, MA, where you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of medication management. This hybrid position offers the opportunity to lead technical execution for a cross-functional engineering team in delivering high-quality software that enhances healthcare outcomes. You will report to Engineering Manager.
Team Summary
Our Medication Management engineering team builds mission-critical solutions used by over 170,000 healthcare providers every day. We empower providers to make informed, personalized clinical treatment decisions in partnership with each patient, regarding their medications, vaccines, and medical supplies. Our collaborative, mission-driven team is passionate about making a meaningful impact on healthcare outcomes, leveraging cutting-edge technology to improve patient safety and streamline workflows. Essential Job Responsibilities

Lead the design, development, and delivery of high-quality software within an agile cross-functional team.

Own technical designs and help guide implementation in alignment with architectural standards and business goals.

Build scalable, maintainable, well-tested software using modern engineering best practices.

Provide technical leadership through code reviews, mentoring, and support for sound design decisions.

Develop strong knowledge of the medication management domain to act as a technical subject matter expert.

Partner closely with product, design, and adjacent engineering teams to deliver practical, scalable solutions aligned with customer needs.

Take ownership of deliverables and coordinate cross-team efforts to ensure successful execution.

Mentor engineers, provide technical guidance, and foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement.

Clearly communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Foster strong collaboration between product and engineering by creating clarity, surfacing risks early, and helping the team make informed, timely decisions.
Expected Education & Experience
-
6+ years of software engineering experience, strong product development background.
-
Proven experience leading full-stack development teams, including technical mentoring and design oversight.

Proficiency in React, modern frontend architecture, core web technologies

HTML, CSS, Java
Script and Java:
-
Solid experience with relational databases and data modeling.
-
Experience designing and supporting APIs and working across distributed systems and evolving system architectures, including monolith and microservices environments.

Nice to have: GraphQL, Unix/Linux experience, and exposure to legacy technologies in large-scale production environments.

Strong communication, ownership, accountability, and a track record of adopting new technologies.
Expected Compensation
$143,000 - $243,000
The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
