Role Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Photonics Platform Hardware Qualification & System Product Design Engineer to support the development, qualification, and productization of a next generation Photonics Platform.

This role combines hands-on photonics module/system qualification with mechanical and opto mechanical product design ownership, spanning the full lifecycle from early prototyping through engineering validation and mass production. You will serve as both a technical expert and design owner, ensuring platform modules meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements at system level.

Experience and or passion for working with and supporting customers, being the voice of the customer and interface to Applied Materials.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Photonics Platform Qualification & Integration
  • Act as a technical expert in at least two R&D domains (Optics, Electronics, Motion, or System Engineering), supporting on tool and off tool module integration, calibration, and qualification
  • Define and execute module qualification and calibration plans, including performance verification against specifications
  • Lead qualification of complex non system components and subsystems, performing technical risk assessment and mitigation
  • Serve as tool/module owner, supporting tool build, complex system integration, and troubleshooting
  • Provide 3rd level technical escalation and advanced debug support for modules within expertise
  • System & Product Design Ownership
  • Own the mechanical and opto mechanical design of specific photonics platform modules or subsystems
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, BOMs, and GD&T, ensuring accuracy, robustness, and manufacturability
  • Perform engineering analyses including hand calculations, FEA, thermal analysis, and tolerance stack up
  • Champion design excellence with a strong focus on reliability, simplicity, and scalable manufacturing
  • Validation, Manufacturing & NPI Support
  • Define, execute, and qualify ATP / acceptance test procedures, calibration flows, and validation methodologies
  • Develop and qualify production documentation, including build books, assembly procedures, and test flows
  • Support NPI, prototype builds, and ramp to mass production, working onsite with manufacturing partners as needed
  • Collaborate closely with Manufacturing, Optics, EE, Tooling, Operations, and Supply Chain teams globally
  • Travel internationally (~10–20%) to support vendor builds, qualifications, and issue resolution
  • Leadership & Cross-Functional Influence
  • Lead or contribute to cross functional projects with moderate to high complexity
  • Mentor junior engineers and act as a design enabler and technical responder
  • Present technical concepts, design trade offs, and risk assessments clearly to internal stakeholders and partners

  • Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or related field
  • 6–10+ years of experience in hardware development, photonics systems, opto mechanical design, or platform engineering
  • Proven experience in module/system qualification, calibration, and performance validation
  • Strong proficiency with 3D CAD and 2D drafting tools (NX, Creo, Solid Works or equivalent)
  • Solid understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals (statics, dynamics, heat transfer, materials)
  • Hands on experience working with manufacturing partners in high volume or advanced engineering environments
  • Excellent communication skills, able to convey complex technical topics across disciplines
  • Ability to work independently, manage ambiguity, and solve complex, system level problems
  • Expert technics in at least one R&D discipline-- Consumer Electronics / Mechanical Product Design / Optics and Light Engine Systems

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with photonics platforms, such as Silicon Photonics, InP, or SiN technologies
  • Familiarity with optical modules, light engines, photonic IC packaging, optical alignment, and calibration
  • Experience supporting full product lifecycle from concept through mass production
  • Background in consumer electronics, optical communication, sensing, or precision opto mechanical systems
  • Prior experience serving as a technical lead or functional project owner
  • Master's degree in Engineering or related discipline
