At our Darmstadt site, we develop advanced contactless motion systems based on magnetic levitation technology. These systems operate in ultra-clean, ultra-high vacuum environments where conventional transport methods would compromise production yield.

To support our growing business, we are looking for a Senior System Engineer (m/f/d) to join our Global Product Support team.

Your Role

In this position, you will play a key role at the interface between engineering, manufacturing, service, and our global customers. You will initially work hands-on with our systems, and over time, you will help scale knowledge across the organization.

This role combines commissioning, troubleshooting, system understanding, and technical knowledge transfer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Commission, calibrate, and support complex semiconductor and display manufacturing systems at customer sites worldwide

  • Perform advanced troubleshooting directly on the equipment (mechanical, electrical, software, and system level)

  • Develop and document Best Known Methods (BKMs), troubleshooting guides, service bulletins, and technical procedures

  • Create training materials and deliver training to Customer Engineers, Technical Product Support teams, and other stakeholders

  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities both internally and at customer sites

  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality & Reliability, and Software teams to resolve field issues sustainably

  • Conduct and coordinate tests according to internal and industry reliability standards

  • Drive root cause analysis, CAPA processes, and technical improvements

  • Contribute to building and scaling global technical knowledge and support capabilities

Your Profile

You are a hands-on engineer with strong system understanding who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and sharing knowledge with others.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field

  • Several years of experience in commissioning, field service, system engineering, or troubleshooting of complex equipment

  • Strong understanding of control systems / control engineering (highly preferred)

  • Ability to think across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, software, system level)

  • Experience in semiconductor equipment, special-purpose machinery, vacuum technology, or automation is a plus

  • Hands-on mindset and willingness to work directly on complex systems

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Interest in documentation, training, and knowledge transfer

  • Fluent in English; German is a plus

  • Willingness to travel internationally up to ~50%

What Makes This Role Unique

This is not a typical field service position.

You will act as a technical multiplier, not only solving problems but also building the frameworks, documentation, and training that enable global teams to operate and support our systems efficiently.

You will play a critical role in scaling knowledge across Applied Materials’ global organization.
